یٰۤاَیُّهَا O الَّذِیْنَ you (who) اٰمَنُوْا believe لَا (Let) not تُلْهِكُمْ divert you اَمْوَالُكُمْ your wealth وَ لَاۤ and not اَوْلَادُكُمْ your children عَنْ from ذِكْرِ (the) remembrance اللّٰهِ ۚ (of) Allah وَ مَنْ And whoever یَّفْعَلْ does ذٰلِكَ that فَاُولٰٓىِٕكَ then those هُمُ [they] الْخٰسِرُوْنَ (are) the losers وَ اَنْفِقُوْا And spend مِنْ from مَّا what رَزَقْنٰكُمْ We have provided you مِّنْ from قَبْلِ before اَنْ [that] یَّاْتِیَ comes اَحَدَكُمُ (to) one of you الْمَوْتُ the death فَیَقُوْلَ and he says رَبِّ My Lord لَوْ لَاۤ Why not اَخَّرْتَنِیْۤ You delay me اِلٰۤی for اَجَلٍ a term قَرِیْبٍ ۙ near فَاَصَّدَّقَ so I would give charity وَ اَكُنْ and be مِّنَ among الصّٰلِحِیْنَ the righteous وَ لَنْ But never یُّؤَخِّرَ will (be) delayed اللّٰهُ (by) Allah نَفْسًا a soul اِذَا when جَآءَ has come اَجَلُهَا ؕ its term وَ اللّٰهُ And Allah خَبِیْرٌۢ (is) All-Aware بِمَا of what تَعْمَلُوْنَ۠ you do
(63:9) O those who have believed! Let not your wealth nor your children divert you from Allah’s remembrance.14 Whosoever does that, such indeed are the losers.
(63:10) And expend of what We have bestowed on you15 before death comes upon one of you and he says, ‘My Lord, only if You would defer me for a little while, so that I expend in charity and become of the righteous.’16
(63:11) But Allah will never defer a soul, once its term has arrived. And Allah is Aware of what you do.
14. Although five daily Prayers and Hajj have been identified by Ibn `Abbas, as being alluded to, most commentators believe that the allusion by “remembrance” here, is to various Islamic obligations.
15. The implication is that expending in the way of Allah can be a cure for the disease of hypocrisy (Au.).
16. This is in the same vein as another ayah,
“Till when death comes to one of them he says, ‘My Lord! Send me back. Haply I could work righteousness in that I left (behind).’ By no means! It is but a word that he utters; and ahead of them is Barzakh until the Day they shall be raised.” (Ibn Kathir).
Ibn `Abbas has said that the verse applies to those Muslims too who fail to perform their religious duties. They too will, at the time of death, wish that they could be deferred so that they could do better there onward (Kashshaf, Ibn Kathir).
