Quran Text of Verse 48-53وَ نَادٰۤیAnd (will) call outاَصْحٰبُ(the) companionsالْاَعْرَافِ(of) the heightsرِجَالًا(to) menیَّعْرِفُوْنَهُمْwhom they recognizeبِسِیْمٰىهُمْby their marksقَالُوْاsayingمَاۤNotاَغْنٰی(has) availedعَنْكُمْ[to] youجَمْعُكُمْyour gatheringوَ مَاand whatكُنْتُمْyou wereتَسْتَكْبِرُوْنَ arrogant (about) اَهٰۤؤُلَآءِAre theseالَّذِیْنَthe ones whomاَقْسَمْتُمْyou had swornلَا(that) notیَنَالُهُمُ(will) grant themاللّٰهُAllahبِرَحْمَةٍ ؕMercyاُدْخُلُواEnterالْجَنَّةَParadiseلَا(There will be) noخَوْفٌfearعَلَیْكُمْupon youوَ لَاۤand notاَنْتُمْyouتَحْزَنُوْنَ will grieve وَ نَادٰۤیAnd (will) call outاَصْحٰبُ(the) companionsالنَّارِ(of) the Fireاَصْحٰبَ(to the) companionsالْجَنَّةِ(of) Paradiseاَنْ[that]اَفِیْضُوْاPourعَلَیْنَاupon usمِنَ[of]الْمَآءِ(some) waterاَوْorمِمَّاof whatرَزَقَكُمُ(has been) provided (to) youاللّٰهُ ؕ(by) AllahقَالُوْۤاThey (will) sayاِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahحَرَّمَهُمَاhas forbidden bothعَلَیtoالْكٰفِرِیْنَۙthe disbelievers الَّذِیْنَThose whoاتَّخَذُوْاtookدِیْنَهُمْtheir religionلَهْوًا(as) an amusementوَّ لَعِبًاand playوَّ غَرَّتْهُمُand deluded themالْحَیٰوةُthe lifeالدُّنْیَا ۚ(of) the worldفَالْیَوْمَSo todayنَنْسٰىهُمْWe forget themكَمَاasنَسُوْاthey forgotلِقَآءَ(the) meetingیَوْمِهِمْ(of) their dayهٰذَا ۙthisوَ مَاand [what]كَانُوْا(as) they used toبِاٰیٰتِنَاwith Our Versesیَجْحَدُوْنَ they reject 7. Al-A'raf Page 157وَ لَقَدْAnd certainlyجِئْنٰهُمْWe had brought (to) themبِكِتٰبٍa Bookفَصَّلْنٰهُwhich We have explainedعَلٰیwithعِلْمٍknowledgeهُدًیa guidanceوَّ رَحْمَةًand mercyلِّقَوْمٍfor a peopleیُّؤْمِنُوْنَ who believe هَلْDoیَنْظُرُوْنَthey waitاِلَّاexceptتَاْوِیْلَهٗ ؕ(for) its fulfillmentیَوْمَ(The) Dayیَاْتِیْ(will) comeتَاْوِیْلُهٗits fulfillmentیَقُوْلُwill sayالَّذِیْنَthose whoنَسُوْهُhad forgotten itمِنْfromقَبْلُbeforeقَدْVerilyجَآءَتْhad comeرُسُلُ(the) Messengersرَبِّنَا(of) our Lordبِالْحَقِّ ۚwith the truthفَهَلْso are (there)لَّنَاfor usمِنْanyشُفَعَآءَintercessorsفَیَشْفَعُوْاso (that) they intercedeلَنَاۤfor usاَوْorنُرَدُّwe are sent backفَنَعْمَلَso (that) we do (deeds)غَیْرَother thanالَّذِیْthat whichكُنَّاwe used toنَعْمَلُ ؕdoقَدْVerilyخَسِرُوْۤاthey lostاَنْفُسَهُمْthemselvesوَ ضَلَّand strayedعَنْهُمْfrom themمَّاwhatكَانُوْاthey used toیَفْتَرُوْنَ۠invent

Translation of Verse 48-53

(7:48) And the people of the Heights will call out to those (in the Fire) they know by their marks, ‘Your numbers⁷⁶ availed you nothing, nor your proud attitude.'⁷⁷

(7:49) ‘Are these (of the Heights) the ones about whom you swore that Allah’s mercy will not reach them?' (They will be told), ‘You may enter Paradise. There is no fear upon you nor should you grieve.'⁷⁸

(7:50) The inmates of Fire will plead to the companions of Paradise, ‘Throw (down) upon us some water, or some of what Allah has provided you.' They will reply, ‘Allah has forbidden both to the unbelievers,'⁷⁹

(7:51) ⁸⁰ those who treated their religion as sport and pastime, and the life of this world deceived them.’ (Allah will say) ‘Today We shall forget them as they forgot the encounter of this their Day, and, as they were wont to argue against Our revelations.'

(7:52) We have brought them a Book which We have expounded with knowledge: a (source of) guidance and mercy unto a people that believe.

(7:53) Are they waiting but for its fulfillment? (But) the day its fulfillment comes, those who had discarded it earlier to oblivion will say, ‘Surely, messengers of our Lord brought the truth. Have we then any intercessors to intercede for us? Or, can we be returned so that we can do differently from what we were doing?' Surely, they squandered their own souls and lost unto them were all that they were forging.

Commentary

76. Another possible rendering of "jam`" is wealth and richness.

77. Ibn `Abbas and Suddi have said that as the people on the Heights recognize some of the coxcomb unbelievers and important men in the Fire, they would address them in these words (Ibn Jarir).

78. Ibn `Abbas has explained that Allah will address the haughty ones and ask them about the people of the Heights: "Are these the ones about whom you swore that Allah will not show them His mercy?'" Then He will turn to the people on the Heights and say: "You may enter Paradise. There is no fear upon you nor should you grieve" (Ibn Jarir). But some commentators have thought that these are the words of the people of the Heights (Au.).

79. "The trialogue between the people of Paradise, the people of the Fire, and the people of the Heights gives some indication of the tremendous range of human faculties in the Next World. These faculties would increase to such an extent that the people of the Paradise, the people of the Fire and the people of the Heights will be able to see, hear and talk to one another. Other Qur'anic statements about the Hereafter enable us to realize that the laws operating in the Next World will be altogether different from those in the present. Notwithstanding this, men's personalities will not undergo any such change" (Mawdudi).
