Surah Ar-Rahman 55:46-78 - Quran Translation Commentary

37. The fear of attendance before Allah saves one from sinning and inspires him to fulfill his duties and responsibilities. The more this fear the more righteous will be the man. Those who fear standing before Allah will enter Paradise where every person will be given two gardens. They will be of two different kinds so they may enjoy thoroughly.

38. The deniers of Allah’s bounties may go on denying. But listen, how Allah is to honour those of His slaves who feared Him.

39. Trees having numerous branches and lots of leaves will obviously also be full of fruits. It will add to the grandeur of the gardens.

40. There will be one spring in every garden which will keep it perennially green and flourishing.

41. Like the two type gardens, their fruits too will be of two different varieties, both in taste and in other qualities.

42. When lining will be of thick silk, how fine will be the upper part!

43. The fruits hanging on the branches will be very low so as to be plucked with ease. In this world there is many a fruit hanging at a hight requiring labour to reach. But the distinction of heavenly trees and their fruits will be strange.

44. To keep their eyesight low is a sign of modesty which is a highly precious virtue and an adoration of women. The houries of Paradise will be clean, modest and chaste from head to foot. The houries meant for men of paradise will not have been touched before them by any human being. They will be intactly virgins. Similarly no jinn Houries would have ever been touched by any jinn before they join the jinns of paradise. For men will be human houries and for jinn the female of their species (jinns)because everyone is attracted only to the opposite sex of its particular species.

These ayah make it clear that just as God fearing men will get Jannat, the God-fearing jinns also will enter Paradise.

45. The Houries of Paradise have been called “Yaqoot” and “Marjan” “Yaqoot” is a precious kind of diamond having red colour. It is very clean and shining and extremely beautiful. Coral (Marjaan) is also a precious stone. Pink coral is used for jewellery. In other words, the houries of Paradise will be like ruby and coral due to their white and rosy complexion and exemplary beauty.

46. The reward of good deed is good before Allah. It is not possible that one who did good may get bad result. The righteous will get only good reward.

47. The two gardens mentioned above will be superior to the two gardens now being described. It appears from this that those who fear standing before Allah will get gardens in Paradise according to their position. The first two gardens will be for the ‘Muqarrabeen’ (those who came nearer to God) and the other two for ‘Swaliheen’ (those who did good deeds). The details of Surah Waqiah also support this. Therein two different kinds of rewards have been described for ‘Muqarrabeen’ and for Ashaabul Yameen’ (Righthand people).

48. Those wo do not believe in reward obviously deny those rewards too which Allah will give to His righteous slaves.

49. The dark green colour indicates their being always green and fresh.

50. The remaining of these garden always green will be a wonderful miracle of Allah.

51. There will be no shortage of water in those heavenly gardens. There will be ever-flowing springs Devine mercy which will be overflowing.

52. Dates and pomegranates come in the category of fruits. Yet they have been described especially because date is the most sweet and delicious fruit and pomegranate is extremely refreshing.

53. They will have external beauty as well as internal goodness.

54. Explanation of Hoor has been given in Surah Dukhan Note:55. The pavilions of Paradise will be very grand. They cannot be compared with worldly tents. Hoories will be residing in those pavilions. They will have affair only with their husbands. As regards virtuous wives of the people of the Paradise, they will live with their husbands in heavenly palaces.

55. Today too when the deniers of Dooms Day hear the mention of heavenly hoors they make a mockery of it. They think that these are mere talks to please one self. But really human nature demands only such a paradise. It is the promise of Allah that, HE will cause His God-fearing slaves to enter such being always green and fresh. paradises wherein all their wishes and desires will be gratified.

56. Green colour gives coolness to eyes besides being beautiful. The thrones of paradise will be high class specimens of their beauty. Sitting thereon of the people of the paradise will manifest their kingly position.

57. Allah is the owner of majesty .Hence you must fear your attendance before Him. He is Great too. So you must believe in His marvels and wonders also.

It is the blessing of His Name that when it is recited His mercy starts showering. All good is in His power. The good and the blessings which HE has kept for His Virtuous slaves are such that they will make them very very pleased and happy and prosperous. There is no limit to His wonders and miracles. Only those people deny Him who do not know Him properly and who do not appreciate His favours and beneficence.
