Al-Baqarah Page 41 فَلَمَّا Then when فَصَلَ set out طَالُوْتُ Talut بِالْجُنُوْدِ ۙ with the forces قَالَ he said اِنَّ Indeed اللّٰهَ Allah مُبْتَلِیْكُمْ will test you بِنَهَرٍ ۚ with a river فَمَنْ So whoever شَرِبَ drinks مِنْهُ from it فَلَیْسَ then he is not مِنِّیْ ۚ from me وَ مَنْ and whoever لَّمْ (does) not یَطْعَمْهُ taste it فَاِنَّهٗ then indeed, he مِنِّیْۤ (is) from me اِلَّا except مَنِ whoever اغْتَرَفَ takes غُرْفَةًۢ (in the) hollow بِیَدِهٖ ۚ (of) his hand فَشَرِبُوْا Then they drank مِنْهُ from it اِلَّا except قَلِیْلًا a few مِّنْهُمْ ؕ of them فَلَمَّا Then when جَاوَزَهٗ he crossed it هُوَ he وَ الَّذِیْنَ and those who اٰمَنُوْا believed مَعَهٗ ۙ with him قَالُوْا they said لَا No طَاقَةَ strength لَنَا for us الْیَوْمَ today بِجَالُوْتَ against Jalut وَ جُنُوْدِهٖ ؕ and his troops قَالَ Said الَّذِیْنَ those who یَظُنُّوْنَ were certain اَنَّهُمْ that they مُّلٰقُوا (would) meet اللّٰهِ ۙ Allah كَمْ How many مِّنْ of فِئَةٍ a company قَلِیْلَةٍ small غَلَبَتْ overcame فِئَةً a company كَثِیْرَةًۢ large بِاِذْنِ by (the) permission اللّٰهِ ؕ (of) Allah وَ اللّٰهُ And Allah مَعَ (is) with الصّٰبِرِیْنَ the patient ones وَ لَمَّا And when بَرَزُوْا they went forth لِجَالُوْتَ to (face) Jalut وَ جُنُوْدِهٖ and his troops قَالُوْا they said رَبَّنَاۤ Our Lord اَفْرِغْ Pour عَلَیْنَا on us صَبْرًا patience وَّ ثَبِّتْ and make firm اَقْدَامَنَا our feet وَ انْصُرْنَا and help us عَلَی against الْقَوْمِ the people الْكٰفِرِیْنَؕ (who are) disbelieving فَهَزَمُوْهُمْ So they defeated them بِاِذْنِ by (the) permission اللّٰهِ ۙ۫ (of) Allah وَ قَتَلَ and killed دَاوٗدُ Dawood جَالُوْتَ Jalut وَ اٰتٰىهُ and gave him اللّٰهُ Allah الْمُلْكَ the kingdom وَ الْحِكْمَةَ and the wisdom وَ عَلَّمَهٗ and taught him مِمَّا that which یَشَآءُ ؕ He willed وَ لَوْ لَا And if not دَفْعُ (for the) repelling اللّٰهِ (by) Allah النَّاسَ [the] people بَعْضَهُمْ some of them بِبَعْضٍ ۙ with others لَّفَسَدَتِ certainly (would have) corrupted الْاَرْضُ the Earth وَ لٰكِنَّ [and] but اللّٰهَ Allah ذُوْ (is) Possessor فَضْلٍ (of) bounty عَلَی to الْعٰلَمِیْنَ the worlds تِلْكَ These اٰیٰتُ (are the) Verses اللّٰهِ (of) Allah نَتْلُوْهَا We recite them عَلَیْكَ to you بِالْحَقِّ ؕ in [the] truth وَ اِنَّكَ And indeed you لَمِنَ (are) surely of الْمُرْسَلِیْنَ the Messengers 2. Al-Baqarah Page 42 تِلْكَ These الرُّسُلُ (are) the Messengers فَضَّلْنَا We (have) preferred بَعْضَهُمْ some of them عَلٰی over بَعْضٍ ۘ others مِنْهُمْ Among them مَّنْ (were those with) whom كَلَّمَ spoke اللّٰهُ Allah وَ رَفَعَ and He raised بَعْضَهُمْ some of them دَرَجٰتٍ ؕ (in) degrees وَ اٰتَیْنَا And We gave عِیْسَی Isa ابْنَ son مَرْیَمَ (of) Maryam الْبَیِّنٰتِ the clear proofs وَ اَیَّدْنٰهُ and We supported him بِرُوْحِ with Spirit الْقُدُسِ ؕ [the] Holy وَ لَوْ And if شَآءَ (had) willed اللّٰهُ Allah مَا not اقْتَتَلَ (would have) fought each other الَّذِیْنَ those who مِنْۢ (came) from بَعْدِهِمْ after them مِّنْۢ from بَعْدِ after مَا [what] جَآءَتْهُمُ came to them الْبَیِّنٰتُ the clear proofs وَ لٰكِنِ [And] but اخْتَلَفُوْا they differed فَمِنْهُمْ [so] of them مَّنْ (are some) who اٰمَنَ believed وَ مِنْهُمْ and of them مَّنْ (are some) who كَفَرَ ؕ denied وَ لَوْ And if شَآءَ (had) willed اللّٰهُ Allah مَا not اقْتَتَلُوْا ۫ they (would have) fought each other وَ لٰكِنَّ [and] but اللّٰهَ Allah یَفْعَلُ does مَا what یُرِیْدُ۠ He intends
(2:249) So, when Tālūt set out along with the troops, he said: “Allah is going to test you by a river, so, whoever drinks from it is not my man, and whoever does not taste it is surely a man of mine, except the one who scoops a little with his hand.” Then they drank from it, except a few of them. So, when it (the river) was crossed by him and by those who believed with him, they said: “There is no strength with us today against Jālūt and his troops.” Said those who believed in their having to meet Allah: “How many small groups have overcome large groups by the will of Allah. Allah is with those who remain patient.”
(2:250) And when they faced Jālūt and his troops, they said: “Our Lord, pour out endurance on us, make firm our feet and help us against the disbelieving people.”
(2:251) So, they defeated them by the will of Allah, and Dāwūd (David) killed Jālūt, and Allah gave him the kingdom and the wisdom and taught him what He willed. Had Allah not been pushing back some people by means of others, the earth would have been spoiled. But Allah is All-Gracious to all the worlds
(2:252) These are the verses of Allah that We recite to you (O Prophet), with all veracity, and certainly you are among the Messengers
(2:253) Those are the messengers some of whom We have given excellence over some others. Among them there are ones to whom Allah spoke (directly) and He raised some of them steps higher (in other respects), and We gave clear signs to ‘Īsā (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary) and supported him with the Holy Spirit. If Allah so willed, those succeeding him would have not fought against each other after clear signs had come to them.But they disagreed among themselves. So, there were some who believed and there were some who disbelieved, and if Allah so willed, they would have not fought against each other. But Allah does what He intends

The wisdom behind this test, as perceived by this humble commentator, appears to be as follows. Not difficult to imagine is the excitement created on such occasions but there are not many who would stay firm in their hour of trial. And should such a time come, the weakness shown by such people becomes contagious making others panic as well. Allah Almighty willed that such people be pruned out. This purpose was accomplished by this test, which is very appropriate, because steadfastness is necessary in fighting. So, being patient, when water is made available without asking in a state of intense thirst, is a proof of steadfastness, and dashing for water is a proof of its absence. Later on comes the unusual: Those who drank too much water became mysteriously more incapacitated. This has appeared in Ruh al-Ma'ani on the authority of Ibn Abi Haim from Ibn ` Abbas ؓ . Now the events and sayings mentioned in this story tell us that there were three kinds of people among them:
(1) The weak in faith who failed to make the grade in their hour of
trial.
(2) The perfect who fully succeeded in their trial but did feel concerned about how low they were in numbers.
(3) The most perfect who did not bother even about that.
It is being said here that these verses in which this event has been mentioned 'are the verses of Allah that We recite to you with all veracity' and this proves that you are certainly among the Messengers.'
1. In Verse 253, beginning with تِلْكَ الرُّسُلُ ('those are the Messenger'), the purpose is to give solace and comfort to the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم since the deniers refused to recognize his prophethood, inspite of the fact that it was conclusively proved, as has been stated in the verse 252: وَإِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِي (And certainly you are among the Messengers.) as well. This situation caused him pain. Therefore, Allah Almighty made him aware of the coming of other prophets too, in varying degrees of station, but universal belief was not witnessed in any of their communities -- some supported while some others opposed. However, this too has its wise considerations which may not necessarily be visible to everyone, but this much is important that one should generally believe that there is definitely a certain wisdom behind this.
2. Since the words تِلْكَ الرُّسُلُ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ (Those are the Messengers some of whom We have given excellence over others) in this verse clearly indicate that some prophets are given higher status than others, we have a difficulty on our hands when we compare this with a hadith, where the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has said:
لا تفضلوا بین انبیاء اللہ
Do not seek preference among prophets.
لا تخیرونی علی موسٰی
Do not give me precedence over Musa.
لا اقول ان احدا افضل من یونس بن متی
I cannot say if anyone is better than Yunus ibn Matta.
These ahadith so obviously forbid the giving of preference to some prophets over some other prophets.
The reply is: These ahadith mean to tell us not to give preference to some prophets over some others, without any proof, out of our own opinion. This is because a prophet's having higher status means that he has a high station in the sight of Allah. Obviously, this knowledge cannot be acquired through conjectures and surmises but should such a proof come from the Qur'an and Sunnah, establishing the precedence of some prophets over some others, then it will be necessary to believe in it.
Now, as to his saying: لا اقول ان احدا افضل من یونس بن متی (I cannot say if
anyone is better than Yunus ibn Matta) and لا تخیرونی علی موسٰی (Do not give me precedence over Musa), this is related to the time when he was not given the knowledge that he has precedence over all other prophets. This was disclosed to him later on through revelation and he did tell the noble Companions about it. (Mazhari)
3. As regards the statement' مِّنْهُم مَّن كَلَّمَ اللَّـهُ (Among them there is he whom Allah spoke to), it may be noted that the conversation with Musa (علیہ السلام) may be without an angel as intermediary, but it certainly was not without hijab (obstruction of view). So, there remains no conflict of meaning with what has been stated in the verse: وَمَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَن يُكَلِّمَهُ اللَّـهُ (It belongs not to any mortal that God should speak to him) (42:51), in which conversation without hijab has been negated. However, post-death conversation without hijab is possible, so this verse from Sarah al-Shura relates to the life in this world.
