وَ لَقَدْ And verily اٰتَیْنَا We gave مُوْسَی Musa الْكِتٰبَ the Scripture وَ جَعَلْنَا and We appointed مَعَهٗۤ with him اَخَاهُ his brother هٰرُوْنَ Harun وَزِیْرًاۚۖ (as) an assistant فَقُلْنَا Then We said اذْهَبَاۤ Go both of you اِلَی to الْقَوْمِ the people الَّذِیْنَ those who كَذَّبُوْا have denied بِاٰیٰتِنَا ؕ Our Signs فَدَمَّرْنٰهُمْ Then We destroyed them تَدْمِیْرًاؕ (with) destruction وَ قَوْمَ And (the) people نُوْحٍ (of) Nuh لَّمَّا when كَذَّبُوا they denied الرُّسُلَ the Messengers اَغْرَقْنٰهُمْ We drowned them وَ جَعَلْنٰهُمْ and We made them لِلنَّاسِ for mankind اٰیَةً ؕ a sign وَ اَعْتَدْنَا And We have prepared لِلظّٰلِمِیْنَ for the wrongdoers عَذَابًا a punishment اَلِیْمًاۚۖ painful وَّ عَادًا And Ad وَّ ثَمُوْدَاۡ and Thamud وَ اَصْحٰبَ and (the) dwellers الرَّسِّ (of) Ar-rass وَ قُرُوْنًۢا and generations بَیْنَ between ذٰلِكَ that كَثِیْرًا many وَ كُلًّا And each ضَرَبْنَا We have set forth لَهُ for him الْاَمْثَالَ ؗ the examples وَ كُلًّا and each تَبَّرْنَا We destroyed تَتْبِیْرًا (with) destruction وَ لَقَدْ And verily اَتَوْا they have come عَلَی upon الْقَرْیَةِ the town الَّتِیْۤ which اُمْطِرَتْ was showered مَطَرَ (with) a rain السَّوْءِ ؕ (of) evil اَفَلَمْ Then do not یَكُوْنُوْا they [were] یَرَوْنَهَا ۚ see it بَلْ Nay كَانُوْا they are لَا not یَرْجُوْنَ expecting نُشُوْرًا Resurrection وَ اِذَا And when رَاَوْكَ they see you اِنْ not یَّتَّخِذُوْنَكَ they take you اِلَّا except هُزُوًا ؕ (in) mockery اَهٰذَا Is this الَّذِیْ the one whom بَعَثَ Allah has sent اللّٰهُ Allah has sent رَسُوْلًا (as) a Messenger اِنْ He would have almost كَادَ He would have almost لَیُضِلُّنَا [surely] misled us عَنْ from اٰلِهَتِنَا our gods لَوْ لَاۤ if not اَنْ that صَبَرْنَا we had been steadfast عَلَیْهَا ؕ to them وَ سَوْفَ And soon یَعْلَمُوْنَ will know حِیْنَ when یَرَوْنَ they will see الْعَذَابَ the punishment مَنْ who اَضَلُّ (is) more astray سَبِیْلًا (from the) way اَرَءَیْتَ Have you seen مَنِ (one) who اتَّخَذَ takes اِلٰهَهٗ (as) his god هَوٰىهُ ؕ his own desire اَفَاَنْتَ Then would you تَكُوْنُ be عَلَیْهِ over him وَكِیْلًاۙ a guardian 25. Al-Furqan Page 364 اَمْ Or تَحْسَبُ do you think اَنَّ that اَكْثَرَهُمْ most of them یَسْمَعُوْنَ hear اَوْ or یَعْقِلُوْنَ ؕ understand اِنْ Not هُمْ they اِلَّا (are) except كَالْاَنْعَامِ like cattle بَلْ Nay هُمْ they اَضَلُّ (are) more astray سَبِیْلًا۠ (from the) way
(25:35) Surely We gave Mūsā the Book, and appointed his brother Hārūn as a minister with him
(25:36) So we said, “Go, both of you, to the people who have rejected Our signs” Then We annihilated them totally
(25:37) As for the people of NūH, when they rejected the messengers, We drowned them and made them an example for mankind, and We have prepared a painful punishment for the transgressors
(25:38) And (We annihilated also the peoples of) ‘Ād and Thamūd and the people of Rass, and many generations in between them
(25:39) To each (of them) We cited examples, and each of them We brought to utter ruin
(25:40) Indeed they (the pagans of Makkah) have passed by the town that was afflicted by an evil rain sent down to it. So, have they not been seeing it? Rather, they do not believe in Resurrection
(25:41) When they see you, they take you only as a laughing stock, (saying) “Is this the man whom Allah has sent as a messenger
(25:42) He would have almost led us astray from our gods, had we not been so firm towards them.” They will know when they will see the punishment, who is farther astray in his way
(25:43) Tell me about the one who has taken his desire as his god, would you then, become a guardian for him
(25:44) Or do you think that most of them listen or understand? They are but like cattle. Rather, they are even farther astray from the (right) way
In the above verses it is mentioned that it had been the common practice of the people through the ages to rebuff the prophets and the message they had brought. In order to give weight to this assertion a few of the well known prophets are mentioned who were rejected by their people and then they were subjected to Allah's wrath and were annihilated completely. By drawing a parallel with the past generations it is elucidated that the pagans of Makkah would not listen to any reason as they were no better than the animals or even worse than that.
It is stated about the people of Sayyidna Nuh (علیہ السلام) that they had rejected the prophets, although they had neither seen the past prophets nor had they rejected them. at is actually meant here is that while denying Sayyidna Nuh (علیہ السلام) they had by implication rejected all the prophets, because the principals of religion expounded by all prophets are essentially the same. Hence rejection of one prophet is tantamount to rejection of all.
أَصْحَابَ الرَّسِّ (People of Rass - 25:38). In Arabic رَس (Rass) means unlined well. Neither Qur'an nor any authentic tradition describes these people in any detail. Whatever information is available about them is through Israelite traditions, which differ from one another. It is more likely that the remaining people of Thamud had settled down near a well. It is not mentioned in the Qur'an or any tradition as to how they were tormented. (Bayan u1-Qur'an)
أَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُ هَوَاهُ (Tell me about the one who has taken his desire as his god - 25:43). The one who practises forbidden things which are against the tenets of Islam to satisfy his personal desires is described in this verse as the worshiper of his own lust. Sayyidna Ibn ` Abbas ؓ said that the selfish desires are like an idol which is worshipped (by the infidels) and then he recited this verse to prove his point. (Qurtubi)
