Quran Text of Verse 48-53وَ نَادٰۤیAnd (will) call outاَصْحٰبُ(the) companionsالْاَعْرَافِ(of) the heightsرِجَالًا(to) menیَّعْرِفُوْنَهُمْwhom they recognizeبِسِیْمٰىهُمْby their marksقَالُوْاsayingمَاۤNotاَغْنٰی(has) availedعَنْكُمْ[to] youجَمْعُكُمْyour gatheringوَ مَاand whatكُنْتُمْyou wereتَسْتَكْبِرُوْنَ arrogant (about) اَهٰۤؤُلَآءِAre theseالَّذِیْنَthe ones whomاَقْسَمْتُمْyou had swornلَا(that) notیَنَالُهُمُ(will) grant themاللّٰهُAllah بِرَحْمَةٍ ؕMercyاُدْخُلُواEnterالْجَنَّةَParadiseلَا(There will be) noخَوْفٌfearعَلَیْكُمْupon youوَ لَاۤand notاَنْتُمْyouتَحْزَنُوْنَ will grieve وَ نَادٰۤیAnd (will) call outاَصْحٰبُ(the) companionsالنَّارِ(of) the Fireاَصْحٰبَ(to the) companionsالْجَنَّةِ(of) Paradiseاَنْ[that]اَفِیْضُوْاPourعَلَیْنَاupon usمِنَ[of]الْمَآءِ(some) waterاَوْorمِمَّاof whatرَزَقَكُمُ(has been) provided (to) you اللّٰهُ ؕ(by) AllahقَالُوْۤاThey (will) sayاِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahحَرَّمَهُمَاhas forbidden bothعَلَیtoالْكٰفِرِیْنَۙthe disbelievers الَّذِیْنَThose whoاتَّخَذُوْاtookدِیْنَهُمْtheir religionلَهْوًا(as) an amusementوَّ لَعِبًاand playوَّ غَرَّتْهُمُand deluded themالْحَیٰوةُthe life الدُّنْیَا ۚ(of) the worldفَالْیَوْمَSo todayنَنْسٰىهُمْWe forget themكَمَاasنَسُوْاthey forgotلِقَآءَ(the) meetingیَوْمِهِمْ(of) their day هٰذَا ۙthisوَ مَاand [what]كَانُوْا(as) they used toبِاٰیٰتِنَاwith Our Versesیَجْحَدُوْنَ they reject 7. Al-A'raf Page 157وَ لَقَدْAnd certainlyجِئْنٰهُمْWe had brought (to) themبِكِتٰبٍa Bookفَصَّلْنٰهُwhich We have explainedعَلٰیwithعِلْمٍknowledgeهُدًیa guidanceوَّ رَحْمَةًand mercyلِّقَوْمٍfor a peopleیُّؤْمِنُوْنَ who believe هَلْDoیَنْظُرُوْنَthey waitاِلَّاexcept تَاْوِیْلَهٗ ؕ(for) its fulfillmentیَوْمَ(The) Dayیَاْتِیْ(will) comeتَاْوِیْلُهٗits fulfillmentیَقُوْلُwill sayالَّذِیْنَthose whoنَسُوْهُhad forgotten itمِنْfromقَبْلُbeforeقَدْVerilyجَآءَتْhad comeرُسُلُ(the) Messengersرَبِّنَا(of) our Lord بِالْحَقِّ ۚwith the truthفَهَلْso are (there)لَّنَاfor usمِنْanyشُفَعَآءَintercessorsفَیَشْفَعُوْاso (that) they intercedeلَنَاۤfor usاَوْorنُرَدُّwe are sent backفَنَعْمَلَso (that) we do (deeds)غَیْرَother thanالَّذِیْthat whichكُنَّاwe used to نَعْمَلُ ؕdoقَدْVerilyخَسِرُوْۤاthey lostاَنْفُسَهُمْthemselvesوَ ضَلَّand strayedعَنْهُمْfrom themمَّاwhatكَانُوْاthey used toیَفْتَرُوْنَ۠invent

Translation of Verse 48-53

(7:48) The people of A‘rāf will call out to the people (of Fire) whom they will recognize through their signs: “Your masses were not of any help to you, nor was the arrogance you used to show

(7:49) Is it these (people of Paradise) about whom you swore that Allah would not allow His mercy to reach them?” (It will be said to such people,) “Enter Paradise; there will be no fear for you, nor shall you grieve.”

(7:50) The people of the Fire will call out to the people of Paradise, “Pour on us some water, or some of what Allah has provided you.” They will say, “Allah has prohibited these for disbelievers

(7:51) who had taken their faith as play and a game, and the worldly life had deceived them.” So, We shall forget them today, as they had forgotten to face this day of theirs, and as they used to deny Our signs

(7:52) Surely We have brought them a book that We have elaborated with knowledge, as guidance and mercy for a people who believe

(7:53) They are waiting for nothing but its final result (i.e. the punishment promised in the Qur’ān). The day when its final result will come, those who had ignored it earlier will say, “Surely, the messengers of our Lord had come with truth. So, are there any intercessors for us who could intercede in our favor? Or, could we be sent back, so that we might do contrary to what we used to do?” Indeed, they have put their selves to loss, and vanished from them all that they used to fabricate

Commentary

Verse:48 Commentary The fifth verse (48) also mentions that the people of A` raf will address the people of Hell and admonish them by saying that the wealth and power that they depended on, and because of which they had become proud and arrogant, went the way of waste for all those strengths did not work for them at their hour of need. Verse:49 Commentary Said in the sixth verse (49) is: أَهَـٰؤُلَاءِ الَّذِينَ أَقْسَمْتُمْ لَا يَنَالُهُمُ اللَّـهُ بِرَ‌حْمَةٍ ۚ ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَا أَنتُمْ تَحْزَنُونَ ﴿49﴾ (Is it these for whom you swore that Allah would not reach them with mercy?" - "Enter the Paradise; there is no fear on you, nor shall you grieve).

Explaining this, Sayyidna ` Abdullah ibn ` Abbas ؓ says: When the questions and answers between the people of A` raf and the people of Paradise and Hell both will be over, that will be the time when the Lord of all the worlds will address the people of Hell and tell them about the people of A` raf that they swore that the people of A` raf will not be forgiven their sins and mercy will not be shown to them. Then, there comes an immediate declaration of His mercy when the people of A` raf will be told: Go and enter the Paradise. You should have no fear of what had happened in the past nor should you have any anxiety about the future.
