Quran Text of Verse 11-17سَیَقُوْلُWill sayلَكَto youالْمُخَلَّفُوْنَthose who remained behindمِنَofالْاَعْرَابِthe BedouinsشَغَلَتْنَاۤKept us busyاَمْوَالُنَاour propertiesوَ اَهْلُوْنَاand our familiesفَاسْتَغْفِرْso ask forgivenessلَنَا ۚfor usیَقُوْلُوْنَThey sayبِاَلْسِنَتِهِمْwith their tonguesمَّاwhatلَیْسَis notفِیْinقُلُوْبِهِمْ ؕtheir heartsقُلْSayفَمَنْThen whoیَّمْلِكُhas powerلَكُمْfor youمِّنَagainstاللّٰهِAllahشَیْـًٔا(in) anythingاِنْifاَرَادَHe intendsبِكُمْfor youضَرًّاharmاَوْorاَرَادَHe intendsبِكُمْfor youنَفْعًا ؕa benefitبَلْNayكَانَisاللّٰهُAllahبِمَاof whatتَعْمَلُوْنَyou doخَبِیْرًا All-Aware بَلْNayظَنَنْتُمْyou thoughtاَنْthatلَّنْ(would) neverیَّنْقَلِبَreturnالرَّسُوْلُthe Messengerوَ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَand the believersاِلٰۤیtoاَهْلِیْهِمْtheir familiesاَبَدًاeverوَّ زُیِّنَthat was made fair-seemingذٰلِكَthat was made fair-seemingفِیْinقُلُوْبِكُمْyour heartsوَ ظَنَنْتُمْAnd you assumedظَنَّan assumptionالسَّوْءِ ۖۚevilوَ كُنْتُمْand you becameقَوْمًۢاa peopleبُوْرًا ruined وَ مَنْAnd whoeverلَّمْ(has) not believedیُؤْمِنْۢ(has) not believedبِاللّٰهِin Allahوَ رَسُوْلِهٖand His Messengerفَاِنَّاۤthen indeed, Weاَعْتَدْنَا[We] have preparedلِلْكٰفِرِیْنَfor the disbelieversسَعِیْرًا a Blazing Fire وَ لِلّٰهِAnd for Allahمُلْكُ(is the) kingdomالسَّمٰوٰتِ(of) the heavensوَ الْاَرْضِ ؕand the earthیَغْفِرُHe forgivesلِمَنْwhomیَّشَآءُHe willsوَ یُعَذِّبُand punishesمَنْwhomیَّشَآءُ ؕHe willsوَ كَانَAnd isاللّٰهُAllahغَفُوْرًاOft-Forgivingرَّحِیْمًا Most Merciful سَیَقُوْلُWill sayالْمُخَلَّفُوْنَthose who remained behindاِذَاwhenانْطَلَقْتُمْyou set forthاِلٰیtowardsمَغَانِمَ(the) spoils of warلِتَاْخُذُوْهَاto take itذَرُوْنَاAllow usنَتَّبِعْكُمْ ۚ(to) follow youیُرِیْدُوْنَThey wishاَنْtoیُّبَدِّلُوْاchangeكَلٰمَ(the) Wordsاللّٰهِ ؕ(of) AllahقُلْSayلَّنْNeverتَتَّبِعُوْنَاwill you follow usكَذٰلِكُمْThusقَالَAllah saidاللّٰهُAllah saidمِنْbeforeقَبْلُ ۚbeforeفَسَیَقُوْلُوْنَThen they will sayبَلْNayتَحْسُدُوْنَنَا ؕyou envy usبَلْNayكَانُوْاthey wereلَاnotیَفْقَهُوْنَunderstandingاِلَّاexceptقَلِیْلًا a little 48. Al-Fath Page 513قُلْSayلِّلْمُخَلَّفِیْنَto those who remained behindمِنَofالْاَعْرَابِthe BedouinsسَتُدْعَوْنَYou will be calledاِلٰیtoقَوْمٍa peopleاُولِیْpossessors of military mightبَاْسٍpossessors of military mightشَدِیْدٍgreatتُقَاتِلُوْنَهُمْyou will fight themاَوْorیُسْلِمُوْنَ ۚthey will submitفَاِنْThen ifتُطِیْعُوْاyou obeyیُؤْتِكُمُAllah will give youاللّٰهُAllah will give youاَجْرًاa rewardحَسَنًا ۚgoodوَ اِنْbut ifتَتَوَلَّوْاyou turn awayكَمَاasتَوَلَّیْتُمْyou turned awayمِّنْbeforeقَبْلُbeforeیُعَذِّبْكُمْHe will punish youعَذَابًا(with) a punishmentاَلِیْمًا painful لَیْسَNot isعَلَیuponالْاَعْمٰیthe blindحَرَجٌany blameوَّ لَاand notعَلَیonالْاَعْرَجِthe lameحَرَجٌany blameوَّ لَاand notعَلَیonالْمَرِیْضِthe sickحَرَجٌ ؕany blameوَ مَنْAnd whoeverیُّطِعِobeysاللّٰهَAllahوَ رَسُوْلَهٗand His MessengerیُدْخِلْهُHe will admit himجَنّٰتٍ(to) Gardensتَجْرِیْflowمِنْfromتَحْتِهَاunderneath themالْاَنْهٰرُ ۚthe riversوَ مَنْbut whoeverیَّتَوَلَّturns awayیُعَذِّبْهُHe will punish himعَذَابًا(with) a punishmentاَلِیْمًا۠painful

Translation of Verse 11-17

11. The nomadic Arabs, who stayed behind, will say to you ˹O Prophet˺, "We were preoccupied with our wealth and families, so ask for forgiveness for us." They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say, "Who then can stand between you and Allah in any way, if He intends harm or benefit for you? In fact, Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

12. The truth is: you thought that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families again. And that was made appealing in your hearts. You harboured evil thoughts ˹about Allah˺, and ˹so˺ became a doomed people."

13. And whoever does not believe in Allah and His Messenger, then We surely have prepared for the disbelievers a blazing Fire.

14. To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He forgives whoever He wills, and punishes whoever He wills. And Allah is All- Forgiving, Most Merciful.

15. Those who stayed behind will say, when you ˹believers˺ set out to take the spoils of war, "Let us accompany you." They wish to change Allah's promise. ¹⁰⁵⁰ Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ "You will not accompany us. This is what Allah has said before." They will then say, "In fact, you are driven by jealousy against us!" ¹⁰⁵¹ The truth is: they can hardly comprehend.

16. Say to nomadic Arabs, who stayed behind, "You will be called ˹to fight˺ against a people of great might, ¹⁰⁵² who you will fight unless they submit. If you then obey, Allah will grant you a fine reward. But if you turn away as you did before, He will inflict upon you a painful punishment."

17. There is no blame on the blind, or the disabled, or the sick ˹for staying behind˺. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be admitted by Him into Gardens under which rivers flow. But whoever turns away will be subjected by Him to a painful punishment.

Commentary

1050. Those who pledged allegiance at Ḥudaibiyah were promised by Allah that the spoils of war obtained from the Tribe of Khaibar would be exclusively theirs.

1051. Meaning, you only say so to deprive us of our share.

1052. This refers to Hawâzin and Thaqîf, two pagan Arab tribes.
