At-Talaq بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ یٰۤاَیُّهَا O النَّبِیُّ Prophet اِذَا When طَلَّقْتُمُ you divorce النِّسَآءَ [the] women فَطَلِّقُوْهُنَّ then divorce them لِعِدَّتِهِنَّ for their waiting period وَ اَحْصُوا and keep count الْعِدَّةَ ۚ (of) the waiting period وَ اتَّقُوا and fear اللّٰهَ Allah رَبَّكُمْ ۚ your Lord لَا (Do) not تُخْرِجُوْهُنَّ expel them مِنْۢ from بُیُوْتِهِنَّ their houses وَ لَا and not یَخْرُجْنَ they should leave اِلَّاۤ except اَنْ that یَّاْتِیْنَ they commit بِفَاحِشَةٍ an immorality مُّبَیِّنَةٍ ؕ clear وَ تِلْكَ And these حُدُوْدُ (are the) limits اللّٰهِ ؕ (of) Allah وَ مَنْ And whoever یَّتَعَدَّ transgresses حُدُوْدَ (the) limits اللّٰهِ (of) Allah فَقَدْ then certainly ظَلَمَ he has wronged نَفْسَهٗ ؕ himself لَا Not تَدْرِیْ you know لَعَلَّ Perhaps اللّٰهَ Allah یُحْدِثُ will bring about بَعْدَ after ذٰلِكَ that اَمْرًا a matter فَاِذَا Then when بَلَغْنَ they have reached اَجَلَهُنَّ their term فَاَمْسِكُوْهُنَّ then retain them بِمَعْرُوْفٍ with kindness اَوْ or فَارِقُوْهُنَّ part with them بِمَعْرُوْفٍ with kindness وَّ اَشْهِدُوْا And take witness ذَوَیْ two men عَدْلٍ just مِّنْكُمْ among you وَ اَقِیْمُوا and establish الشَّهَادَةَ the testimony لِلّٰهِ ؕ for Allah ذٰلِكُمْ That یُوْعَظُ is instructed بِهٖ with it مَنْ whoever كَانَ [is] یُؤْمِنُ believes بِاللّٰهِ in Allah وَ الْیَوْمِ and the Day الْاٰخِرِ ؕ۬ the Last وَ مَنْ And whoever یَّتَّقِ fears اللّٰهَ Allah یَجْعَلْ He will make لَّهٗ for him مَخْرَجًاۙ a way out وَّ یَرْزُقْهُ And He will provide for him مِنْ from حَیْثُ where لَا not یَحْتَسِبُ ؕ he thinks وَ مَنْ And whoever یَّتَوَكَّلْ puts his trust عَلَی upon اللّٰهِ Allah فَهُوَ then He حَسْبُهٗ ؕ (is) sufficient for him اِنَّ Indeed اللّٰهَ Allah بَالِغُ (will) accomplish اَمْرِهٖ ؕ His purpose قَدْ Indeed جَعَلَ has set اللّٰهُ Allah لِكُلِّ for every شَیْءٍ thing قَدْرًا a measure وَ الّٰٓـِٔیْ And those who یَىِٕسْنَ have despaired مِنَ of الْمَحِیْضِ the menstruation مِنْ among نِّسَآىِٕكُمْ your women اِنِ if ارْتَبْتُمْ you doubt فَعِدَّتُهُنَّ then their waiting period ثَلٰثَةُ (is) three اَشْهُرٍ ۙ months وَّ الّٰٓـِٔیْ and the ones who لَمْ not یَحِضْنَ ؕ [they] menstruated وَ اُولَاتُ And those who (are) الْاَحْمَالِ pregnant اَجَلُهُنَّ their term (is) اَنْ until یَّضَعْنَ they deliver حَمْلَهُنَّ ؕ their burdens وَ مَنْ And whoever یَّتَّقِ fears اللّٰهَ Allah یَجْعَلْ He will make لَّهٗ for him مِنْ of اَمْرِهٖ his affair یُسْرًا ease ذٰلِكَ That اَمْرُ (is the) Command اللّٰهِ (of) Allah اَنْزَلَهٗۤ which He has sent down اِلَیْكُمْ ؕ to you وَ مَنْ and whoever یَّتَّقِ fears اللّٰهَ Allah یُكَفِّرْ He will remove عَنْهُ from him سَیِّاٰتِهٖ his misdeeds وَ یُعْظِمْ and make great لَهٗۤ for him اَجْرًا (his) reward 65. At-Talaq Page 559 اَسْكِنُوْهُنَّ Lodge them مِنْ from حَیْثُ where سَكَنْتُمْ you dwell مِّنْ (out) of وُّجْدِكُمْ your means وَ لَا and (do) not تُضَآرُّوْهُنَّ harm them لِتُضَیِّقُوْا to distress عَلَیْهِنَّ ؕ [on] them وَ اِنْ And if كُنَّ they are اُولَاتِ those (who are) حَمْلٍ pregnant فَاَنْفِقُوْا then spend عَلَیْهِنَّ on them حَتّٰی until یَضَعْنَ they deliver حَمْلَهُنَّ ۚ their burden فَاِنْ Then if اَرْضَعْنَ they suckle لَكُمْ for you فَاٰتُوْهُنَّ then give them اُجُوْرَهُنَّ ۚ their payment وَ اْتَمِرُوْا and consult بَیْنَكُمْ among yourselves بِمَعْرُوْفٍ ۚ with kindness وَ اِنْ but if تَعَاسَرْتُمْ you disagree فَسَتُرْضِعُ then may suckle لَهٗۤ for him اُخْرٰیؕ another (women) لِیُنْفِقْ Let spend ذُوْ owner سَعَةٍ (of) ample means مِّنْ from سَعَتِهٖ ؕ his ample means وَ مَنْ and (he) who قُدِرَ is restricted عَلَیْهِ on him رِزْقُهٗ his provision فَلْیُنْفِقْ let him spend مِمَّاۤ from what اٰتٰىهُ he has been given اللّٰهُ ؕ (by) Allah لَا Does not یُكَلِّفُ burden اللّٰهُ Allah نَفْسًا any soul اِلَّا except مَاۤ (with) what اٰتٰىهَا ؕ He has given it سَیَجْعَلُ Will bring about اللّٰهُ Allah بَعْدَ after عُسْرٍ hardship یُّسْرًا۠ ease
This Medinian sûrah outlines the manner of divorce and accommodation of divorced women and their young children (verses 1-7). Those who comply with Allah's commands are promised a great reward, whereas those who defy Him are warned of the fate of those who were destroyed before. Complying with Allah's orders is elaborated upon in the next sûrah.
1. O Prophet! ˹Instruct the believers:˺ When you ˹intend to˺ divorce women, then divorce them with concern for their waiting period, 1205 and count it accurately. And fear Allah, your Lord. Do not force them out of their homes ˹during the waiting period˺, nor should they leave -unless they commit a blatant misconduct. These are the limits set by Allah. And whoever transgresses Allah's limits has truly wronged his own soul. You never know, perhaps Allah will bring about a change ˹of heart˺ later. 1206
2. Then when they have ˹almost˺ reached the end of their waiting period, either retain them honourably or separate from them honourably. 1207 And call two of your reliable men to witness ˹either way˺-and ˹let the witnesses˺ bear true testimony for ˹the sake of˺ Allah. This is enjoined on whoever has faith in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make a way out for them,
3. and provide for them from sources they could never imagine. And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He ˹alone˺ is sufficient for them. Certainly Allah achieves His Will. Allah has already set a destiny for everything.
4. As for your women past the age of menstruation, in case you do not know, their waiting period is three months, and those who have not menstruated as well. As for those who are pregnant, their waiting period ends with delivery. 1208 And whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make their matters easy for them.
5. This is the commandment of Allah, which He has revealed to you. And whoever is mindful of Allah, He will absolve them of their sins and reward them immensely.
6. Let them live where you live ˹during their waiting period˺, according to your means. And do not harass them to make their stay unbearable. If they are pregnant, then maintain them until they deliver. And if they nurse your child, 1209 compensate them, and consult together courteously. But if you fail to reach an agreement, then another woman will nurse ˹the child˺ for the father.
7. Let the man of wealth provide according to his means. As for the one with limited resources, let him provide according to whatever Allah has given him. Allah does not require of any soul beyond what He has given it. After hardship, Allah will bring about ease.
1205. Meaning, when a husband intends to divorce his wife-after the consummation of marriage-he should divorce her outside her monthly cycle, provided that he has not touched her after her period. This makes it easy for the wife to observe her ' iddah (waiting period for around three months, see 65:4). Otherwise, things will be complicated for her. For example, if divorce happens after sexual intercourse, she might get pregnant, which delays the end of 'iddah until the end of her pregnancy. If divorce happens during a monthly cycle, scholars are in disagreement as to whether the divorce counts or not. If it does not, she has to wait until her menstruation is over to see if her husband still wants to divorce her.
1206. Perhaps the husband who has divorced his wife may change his mind and restore the marriage before the end of her waiting period (after the first or second count of revocable divorce).
1207. A husband may separate from his wife after each of the first two counts of divorce or at the end of her waiting period with dignity. If he chooses to stay with her after the first two counts of divorce then divorces her a third time, the marriage is terminated at the end of her third waiting period. The wife will have to marry and divorce another man before she can be remarried to her ex- husband ( see 2:230). However, a woman marrying someone with the intention of getting divorced, in order to return to her first husband, is forbidden.
1208. This applies to pregnant women who are divorced or widowed.
1209. After the divorce is finalized.
