Quran Text of Verse 1-1131. Luqman Page 41131. Luqmanبِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِالٓمّٓۚAlif Lam Mim تِلْكَTheseاٰیٰتُ(are) Versesالْكِتٰبِ(of) the Bookالْحَكِیْمِۙthe Wise هُدًیA guidanceوَّ رَحْمَةًand a mercyلِّلْمُحْسِنِیْنَۙfor the good-doers الَّذِیْنَThose whoیُقِیْمُوْنَestablishالصَّلٰوةَthe prayerوَ یُؤْتُوْنَand giveالزَّكٰوةَzakahوَ هُمْand theyبِالْاٰخِرَةِin the Hereafterهُمْ[they]یُوْقِنُوْنَؕbelieve firmly اُولٰٓىِٕكَThoseعَلٰی(are) onهُدًیguidanceمِّنْfromرَّبِّهِمْtheir Lordوَ اُولٰٓىِٕكَand thoseهُمُ[they]الْمُفْلِحُوْنَ (are) the successful وَ مِنَAnd ofالنَّاسِthe mankindمَنْ(is he) whoیَّشْتَرِیْpurchasesلَهْوَidle talesالْحَدِیْثِidle talesلِیُضِلَّto misleadعَنْfromسَبِیْلِ(the) pathاللّٰهِ(of) Allahبِغَیْرِwithoutعِلْمٍ ۖۗknowledgeوَّ یَتَّخِذَهَاand takes itهُزُوًا ؕ(in) ridiculeاُولٰٓىِٕكَThoseلَهُمْfor themعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentمُّهِیْنٌ humiliating وَ اِذَاAnd whenتُتْلٰیare recitedعَلَیْهِto himاٰیٰتُنَاOur Versesوَلّٰیhe turns awayمُسْتَكْبِرًاarrogantlyكَاَنْas ifلَّمْnotیَسْمَعْهَاhe (had) heard themكَاَنَّas ifفِیْۤinاُذُنَیْهِhis earsوَقْرًا ۚ(is) deafnessفَبَشِّرْهُSo give him tidingsبِعَذَابٍof a punishmentاَلِیْمٍ painful اِنَّIndeedالَّذِیْنَthose whoاٰمَنُوْاbelieveوَ عَمِلُواand doالصّٰلِحٰتِrighteous deedsلَهُمْfor themجَنّٰتُ(are) Gardensالنَّعِیْمِۙ(of) Delight خٰلِدِیْنَ(To) abide foreverفِیْهَا ؕin itوَعْدَ(The) Promise of Allahاللّٰهِ(The) Promise of Allahحَقًّا ؕ(is) trueوَ هُوَAnd Heالْعَزِیْزُ(is) the All-Mightyالْحَكِیْمُ the All-Wise خَلَقَHe createdالسَّمٰوٰتِthe heavensبِغَیْرِwithoutعَمَدٍpillarsتَرَوْنَهَاthat you seeوَ اَلْقٰیand has castفِیinالْاَرْضِthe earthرَوَاسِیَfirm mountainsاَنْlestتَمِیْدَit (might) shakeبِكُمْwith youوَ بَثَّand He dispersedفِیْهَاin itمِنْfromكُلِّeveryدَآبَّةٍ ؕcreatureوَ اَنْزَلْنَاAnd We sent downمِنَfromالسَّمَآءِthe skyمَآءًwaterفَاَنْۢبَتْنَاthen We caused to growفِیْهَاthereinمِنْofكُلِّeveryزَوْجٍkindكَرِیْمٍ noble هٰذَاThisخَلْقُ(is the) creationاللّٰهِ(of) AllahفَاَرُوْنِیْSo show Meمَا ذَاwhatخَلَقَhave createdالَّذِیْنَthoseمِنْbesides Himدُوْنِهٖ ؕbesides HimبَلِNayالظّٰلِمُوْنَthe wrongdoersفِیْ(are) inضَلٰلٍerrorمُّبِیْنٍ۠clear

Surah Introduction

This Meccan sûrah is named after Luqmân, a wise African man who is quoted giving pieces of advice to his son (verses 12-19) on one's relationship with Allah and the people. While the believers are praised, the pagans are condemned for their ingratitude, distracting others from the Way of Allah, and for setting up idols as His equals. Similar to the previous sûrah, references are made to Allah's natural marvels, challenging the deniers to point out anything their gods have created. The sûrah concludes by warning humanity of the Day of Judgment, ushering in the next sûrah.

Translation of Verse 1-111. In the Name of Allah-the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

1. Alif-Lãm-Mĩm .

2. These are the verses of the Book, rich in wisdom.

3. ˹It is˺ a guide and mercy for the good-doers-

4. those who establish prayer, pay alms-tax, and have sure faith in the Hereafter.

5. It is they who are ˹truly˺ guided by their Lord, and it is they who will be successful.

6. But there are some who employ theatrics, ⁸³² only to lead others away from Allah's Way-without any knowledge-and to make a mockery of it. They will suffer a humiliating punishment.

7. Whenever Our revelations are recited to them, they turn away in arrogance as if they did not hear them, as if there is deafness in their ears. So give them good news ˹O Prophet˺ of a painful punishment.

8. Surely those who believe and do good will have the Gardens of Bliss,

9. staying there forever. Allah's promise is true. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise.

10. He created the heavens without pillars-as you can see-and placed firm mountains upon the earth so it does not shake with you, and scattered throughout it all types of creatures. And We send down rain from the sky, causing every type of fine plant to grow on earth.

11. This is Allah's creation. Now show Me what those ˹gods˺ other than Him have created. In fact, the wrongdoers are clearly astray.

Commentary

832. Some pagan Arabs used to utilize singing, dancing, chanting, etc. to distract people's attention from listening to the recitation of the Quran.
