49. Al-Hujurat بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ یٰۤاَیُّهَا O (you who) الَّذِیْنَ (O) you who اٰمَنُوْا believe لَا (Do) not تُقَدِّمُوْا put (yourselves) forward بَیْنَ before Allah یَدَیِ before Allah اللّٰهِ before Allah وَ رَسُوْلِهٖ and His Messenger وَ اتَّقُوا and fear اللّٰهَ ؕ Allah اِنَّ Indeed اللّٰهَ Allah سَمِیْعٌ (is) All-Hearer عَلِیْمٌ All-Knower یٰۤاَیُّهَا O (you who) الَّذِیْنَ (O) you who اٰمَنُوْا believe لَا (Do) not تَرْفَعُوْۤا raise اَصْوَاتَكُمْ your voices فَوْقَ above صَوْتِ (the) voice النَّبِیِّ (of) the Prophet وَ لَا and (do) not تَجْهَرُوْا be loud لَهٗ to him بِالْقَوْلِ in speech كَجَهْرِ like (the) loudness بَعْضِكُمْ (of) some of you لِبَعْضٍ to others اَنْ lest تَحْبَطَ become worthless اَعْمَالُكُمْ your deeds وَ اَنْتُمْ while you لَا (do) not تَشْعُرُوْنَ perceive اِنَّ Indeed الَّذِیْنَ those who یَغُضُّوْنَ lower اَصْوَاتَهُمْ their voices عِنْدَ (in) presence رَسُوْلِ (of the) Messenger of Allah اللّٰهِ (of the) Messenger of Allah اُولٰٓىِٕكَ those الَّذِیْنَ (are) the ones امْتَحَنَ Allah has tested اللّٰهُ Allah has tested قُلُوْبَهُمْ their hearts لِلتَّقْوٰی ؕ for righteousness لَهُمْ For them مَّغْفِرَةٌ (is) forgiveness وَّ اَجْرٌ and a reward عَظِیْمٌ great اِنَّ Indeed الَّذِیْنَ those who یُنَادُوْنَكَ call you مِنْ from وَّرَآءِ behind الْحُجُرٰتِ the private chambers اَكْثَرُهُمْ most of them لَا (do) not یَعْقِلُوْنَ understand 49. Al-Hujurat Page 516 وَ لَوْ And if اَنَّهُمْ they صَبَرُوْا had been patient حَتّٰی until تَخْرُجَ you came out اِلَیْهِمْ to them لَكَانَ certainly it would be خَیْرًا better لَّهُمْ ؕ for them وَ اللّٰهُ And Allah غَفُوْرٌ (is) Oft-Forgiving رَّحِیْمٌ Most Merciful یٰۤاَیُّهَا O you who believe الَّذِیْنَ O you who believe اٰمَنُوْۤا O you who believe اِنْ If جَآءَكُمْ comes to you فَاسِقٌۢ a wicked person بِنَبَاٍ with information فَتَبَیَّنُوْۤا investigate اَنْ lest تُصِیْبُوْا you harm قَوْمًۢا a people بِجَهَالَةٍ in ignorance فَتُصْبِحُوْا then you become عَلٰی over مَا what فَعَلْتُمْ you have done نٰدِمِیْنَ regretful وَ اعْلَمُوْۤا And know اَنَّ that فِیْكُمْ among you رَسُوْلَ (is the) Messenger of Allah اللّٰهِ ؕ (is the) Messenger of Allah لَوْ If یُطِیْعُكُمْ he were to obey you فِیْ in كَثِیْرٍ much مِّنَ of الْاَمْرِ the matter لَعَنِتُّمْ surely you would be in difficulty وَ لٰكِنَّ but اللّٰهَ Allah حَبَّبَ has endeared اِلَیْكُمُ to you الْاِیْمَانَ the Faith وَ زَیَّنَهٗ and has made it pleasing فِیْ in قُلُوْبِكُمْ your hearts وَ كَرَّهَ and has made hateful اِلَیْكُمُ to you الْكُفْرَ disbelief وَ الْفُسُوْقَ and defiance وَ الْعِصْیَانَ ؕ and disobedience اُولٰٓىِٕكَ Those هُمُ (are) they الرّٰشِدُوْنَۙ the guided ones فَضْلًا A Bounty مِّنَ from Allah اللّٰهِ from Allah وَ نِعْمَةً ؕ and favor وَ اللّٰهُ And Allah عَلِیْمٌ (is) All-Knower حَكِیْمٌ All-Wise وَ اِنْ And if طَآىِٕفَتٰنِ two parties مِنَ among الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ the believers اقْتَتَلُوْا fight فَاَصْلِحُوْا then make peace بَیْنَهُمَا ۚ between both of them فَاِنْۢ But if بَغَتْ oppresses اِحْدٰىهُمَا one of them عَلَی on الْاُخْرٰی the other فَقَاتِلُوا then fight الَّتِیْ one which تَبْغِیْ oppresses حَتّٰی until تَفِیْٓءَ it returns اِلٰۤی to اَمْرِ (the) command اللّٰهِ ۚ (of) Allah فَاِنْ Then if فَآءَتْ it returns فَاَصْلِحُوْا then make peace بَیْنَهُمَا between them بِالْعَدْلِ with justice وَ اَقْسِطُوْا ؕ and act justly اِنَّ Indeed اللّٰهَ Allah یُحِبُّ loves الْمُقْسِطِیْنَ those who act justly اِنَّمَا Only الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ the believers اِخْوَةٌ (are) brothers فَاَصْلِحُوْا so make peace بَیْنَ between اَخَوَیْكُمْ your brothers وَ اتَّقُوا and fear Allah اللّٰهَ and fear Allah لَعَلَّكُمْ so that you may تُرْحَمُوْنَ۠ receive mercy
This Medinian sûrah, which takes its name from the reference to the Prophet's private quarters in verse 4, instructs the believers on the proper conduct towards the Prophet (verses 1-5) and the social etiquette of dealing with other believers (verses 6-12) and the rest of humanity (verse 13). At the end of the sûrah, the nomadic Arabs are taught that true faith is proven by action not only words.
1. O believers! Do not proceed ˹in any matter˺ before ˹a decree from˺ Allah and His Messenger. And fear Allah. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
2. O believers! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him as you do to one another, 1069 or your deeds will become void while you are unaware.
3. Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of Allah's Messenger are the ones whose hearts Allah has refined for righteousness. They will have forgiveness and a great reward.
4. Indeed, most of those who call out to you ˹O Prophet˺ from outside ˹your˺ private quarters have no understanding ˹of manners˺. 1070
5. Had they been patient until you could come out to them, it would have certainly been better for them. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
6. O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify ˹it˺ so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done. 1071
7. And keep in mind that Allah's Messenger is ˹still˺ in your midst. If he were to yield to you in many matters, you would surely suffer ˹the consequences˺. 1072 But Allah has endeared faith to you, making it appealing in your hearts. And He has made disbelief, rebelliousness, and disobedience detestable to you. Those are the ones rightly guided.
8. ˹This is˺ a bounty and a blessing from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
9. And if two groups of believers fight each other, then make peace between them. But if one of them transgresses against the other, then fight against the transgressing group until they ˹are willing to˺ submit to the rule of Allah. If they do so, then make peace between both ˹groups˺ in all fairness and act justly. Surely Allah loves those who uphold justice.
10. The believers are but one brotherhood, so make peace between your brothers. And be mindful of Allah so you may be shown mercy.
1069. There is also a different interpretation: "... nor call him ˹by his name˺ as you call one another." In other words, Do not say, 'O Muḥammad.' Rather, say, 'O Prophet.'
1070. A group from the tribe of Bani Tamîm came to see the Prophet ( ﷺ ) while he was taking a nap in the afternoon. They stood outside the homes of his wives and started calling him out loud.
1071. Al-Walîd ibn 'Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'aiṭ was sent by the Prophet ( ﷺ ) to collect alms-tax from Bani Al-Muṣṭaliq. They went out to receive Al-Walîd but he assumed they wanted to harm him. Therefore, he quickly returned to the Prophet ( ﷺ ) with the bad news so he would punish them. Shortly after, a delegation from Bani Al- Muṣṭaliq came to clarify the misunderstanding.
1072. Or things would have been difficult for you.
