Surah 63. Al-Munafiqun

Quran Text of Verse 1-863. Al-Munafiqunبِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِاِذَاWhenجَآءَكَcome to youالْمُنٰفِقُوْنَthe hypocritesقَالُوْاthey sayنَشْهَدُWe testifyاِنَّكَthat youلَرَسُوْلُ(are) surely (the) Messengerاللّٰهِ ۘ(of) Allahوَ اللّٰهُAnd Allahیَعْلَمُknowsاِنَّكَthat youلَرَسُوْلُهٗ ؕ(are) surely His Messengerوَ اللّٰهُand Allahیَشْهَدُtestifiesاِنَّthatالْمُنٰفِقِیْنَthe hypocritesلَكٰذِبُوْنَۚ(are) surely liars اِتَّخَذُوْۤاThey takeاَیْمَانَهُمْtheir oathsجُنَّةً(as) a coverفَصَدُّوْاso they turn awayعَنْfromسَبِیْلِ(the) Wayاللّٰهِ ؕ(of) AllahاِنَّهُمْIndeedسَآءَevil isمَاwhatكَانُوْاthey used (to)یَعْمَلُوْنَ do ذٰلِكَThatبِاَنَّهُمْ(is) becauseاٰمَنُوْاthey believedثُمَّthenكَفَرُوْاthey disbelieved;فَطُبِعَso were sealedعَلٰی[upon]قُلُوْبِهِمْtheir heartsفَهُمْso theyلَا(do) notیَفْقَهُوْنَ understand وَ اِذَاAnd whenرَاَیْتَهُمْyou see themتُعْجِبُكَpleases youاَجْسَامُهُمْ ؕtheir bodiesوَ اِنْand ifیَّقُوْلُوْاthey speakتَسْمَعْyou listenلِقَوْلِهِمْ ؕto their speechكَاَنَّهُمْas if they (were)خُشُبٌpieces of woodمُّسَنَّدَةٌ ؕpropped upیَحْسَبُوْنَThey thinkكُلَّeveryصَیْحَةٍshoutعَلَیْهِمْ ؕ(is) against themهُمُTheyالْعَدُوُّ(are) the enemyفَاحْذَرْهُمْ ؕso beware of themقٰتَلَهُمُMay destroy themاللّٰهُ ؗAllahاَنّٰیHowیُؤْفَكُوْنَ are they deluded 63. Al-Munafiqun Page 555وَ اِذَاAnd whenقِیْلَit is saidلَهُمْto themتَعَالَوْاComeیَسْتَغْفِرْwill ask forgivenessلَكُمْfor youرَسُوْلُ(the) Messengerاللّٰهِ(of) AllahلَوَّوْاThey turn asideرُءُوْسَهُمْtheir headsوَ رَاَیْتَهُمْand you see themیَصُدُّوْنَturning awayوَ هُمْwhile theyمُّسْتَكْبِرُوْنَ (are) arrogant سَوَآءٌ(It) is sameعَلَیْهِمْfor themاَسْتَغْفَرْتَwhether you ask forgivenessلَهُمْfor themاَمْorلَمْ(do) notتَسْتَغْفِرْask forgivenessلَهُمْ ؕfor themلَنْNeverیَّغْفِرَwill forgiveاللّٰهُAllahلَهُمْ ؕ[to] themاِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahلَا(does) notیَهْدِیguideالْقَوْمَthe peopleالْفٰسِقِیْنَ the defiantly disobedient هُمُTheyالَّذِیْنَ(are) those whoیَقُوْلُوْنَsayلَا(Do) notتُنْفِقُوْاspendعَلٰیonمَنْ(those) whoعِنْدَ(are) withرَسُوْلِ(the) Messengerاللّٰهِ(of) Allahحَتّٰیuntilیَنْفَضُّوْا ؕthey disbandوَ لِلّٰهِAnd for Allahخَزَآىِٕنُ(are the) treasuresالسَّمٰوٰتِ(of) the heavensوَ الْاَرْضِand the earthوَ لٰكِنَّbutالْمُنٰفِقِیْنَthe hypocritesلَا(do) notیَفْقَهُوْنَ understand یَقُوْلُوْنَThey sayلَىِٕنْIfرَّجَعْنَاۤwe returnاِلَیtoالْمَدِیْنَةِAl-Madinahلَیُخْرِجَنَّsurely will expelالْاَعَزُّthe more honorableمِنْهَاfrom itالْاَذَلَّ ؕthe more humbleوَ لِلّٰهِBut for Allahالْعِزَّةُ(is) the honorوَ لِرَسُوْلِهٖand for His Messengerوَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِیْنَand for the believersوَ لٰكِنَّbutالْمُنٰفِقِیْنَthe hypocritesلَا(do) notیَعْلَمُوْنَ۠know

Surah Introduction

Similar to the two previous sûrahs, this Medinian sûrah closes by offering more advice to the believers. The hypocrites are rebuked for hindering others from the path of Allah and discouraging people from donating in His cause. In contrast, the believers are advised to donate before they are overtaken by death-a reality that can come at any time.

Translation of Verse 1-81. In the Name of Allah-the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

1. When the hypocrites come to you ˹O Prophet˺, they say, "We bear witness that you are certainly the Messenger of Allah"-and surely Allah knows that you are His Messenger-but Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are truly liars.

2. They have made their ˹false˺ oaths as a shield, hindering ˹others˺ from the Way of Allah. Evil indeed is what they do!

3. This is because they believed and then abandoned faith. Therefore, their hearts have been sealed, so they do not comprehend.

4. When you see them, their appearance impresses you. And when they speak, you listen to their ˹impressive˺ speech. But they are ˹just˺ like ˹worthless˺ planks of wood leaned ˹against a wall˺. They think every cry is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah condemn them! How can they be deluded ˹from the truth˺?

5. When it is said to them, "Come! The Messenger of Allah will pray for you to be forgiven," they turn their heads ˹in disgust˺, and you see them ˹O Prophet˺ turn away in arrogance.

6. It is the same whether you pray for their forgiveness or not, Allah will not forgive them. Surely Allah does not guide the rebellious people.

7. They are the ones who say ˹to one another˺, "Do not spend ˹anything˺ on those ˹emigrants˺ with the Messenger of Allah so that they will break away ˹from him˺." But to Allah ˹alone˺ belong the treasuries of the heavens and the earth, yet the hypocrites do not comprehend.

8. They say, "If we return to Medina, the honourable will definitely expel the inferior." But all honour and power belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, yet the hypocrites do not know.
