Quran Text of Verse 7-12وَ اِذْAnd whenتَاَذَّنَproclaimedرَبُّكُمْyour LordلَىِٕنْIfشَكَرْتُمْyou are thankfulلَاَزِیْدَنَّكُمْsurely I will increase youوَ لَىِٕنْbut ifكَفَرْتُمْyou are ungratefulاِنَّindeedعَذَابِیْMy punishmentلَشَدِیْدٌ (is) surely severe وَ قَالَAnd saidمُوْسٰۤیMusaاِنْIfتَكْفُرُوْۤاyou disbelieveاَنْتُمْyouوَ مَنْand whoeverفِی(is) inالْاَرْضِthe earthجَمِیْعًا ۙallفَاِنَّthen indeedاللّٰهَAllahلَغَنِیٌّcertainly (is) Free of needحَمِیْدٌ Praiseworthy اَلَمْHas notیَاْتِكُمْcome to youنَبَؤُا(the) newsالَّذِیْنَ(of) those whoمِنْ(were) before youقَبْلِكُمْ(were) before youقَوْمِthe peopleنُوْحٍof Nuhوَّ عَادٍand Aadوَّ ثَمُوْدَ ۛؕ۬and Thamudوَ الَّذِیْنَand those whoمِنْۢ(were) after themبَعْدِهِمْ ۛؕ(were) after themلَاNoneیَعْلَمُهُمْknows themاِلَّاexceptاللّٰهُ ؕAllahجَآءَتْهُمْCame to themرُسُلُهُمْtheir Messengersبِالْبَیِّنٰتِwith clear proofsفَرَدُّوْۤاbut they returnedاَیْدِیَهُمْtheir handsفِیْۤinاَفْوَاهِهِمْtheir mouthsوَ قَالُوْۤاand they saidاِنَّاindeed, weكَفَرْنَا[we] disbelieveبِمَاۤin whatاُرْسِلْتُمْyou have been sentبِهٖwith [it]وَ اِنَّاand indeed, weلَفِیْ(are) surely inشَكٍّdoubtمِّمَّاabout whatتَدْعُوْنَنَاۤyou invite usاِلَیْهِto itمُرِیْبٍ suspicious قَالَتْSaidرُسُلُهُمْtheir MessengersاَفِیCan (there) be aboutاللّٰهِAllahشَكٌّany doubtفَاطِرِ(the) Creatorالسَّمٰوٰتِ(of) the heavensوَ الْاَرْضِ ؕand the earthیَدْعُوْكُمْHe invites youلِیَغْفِرَso that He may forgiveلَكُمْfor youمِّنْ[of]ذُنُوْبِكُمْyour sinsوَ یُؤَخِّرَكُمْand give you respiteاِلٰۤیforاَجَلٍa termمُّسَمًّی ؕappointedقَالُوْۤاThey saidاِنْNotاَنْتُمْyouاِلَّا(are) butبَشَرٌa humanمِّثْلُنَا ؕlike usتُرِیْدُوْنَyou wishاَنْtoتَصُدُّوْنَاhinder usعَمَّاfrom whatكَانَused toیَعْبُدُworshipاٰبَآؤُنَاour forefathersفَاْتُوْنَاSo bring usبِسُلْطٰنٍan authorityمُّبِیْنٍ clear 14. Ibrahim Page 257قَالَتْSaidلَهُمْto themرُسُلُهُمْtheir MessengersاِنْNotنَّحْنُwe (are)اِلَّاbutبَشَرٌa humanمِّثْلُكُمْlike youوَ لٰكِنَّbutاللّٰهَAllahیَمُنُّbestows His GraceعَلٰیonمَنْwhomیَّشَآءُHe willsمِنْofعِبَادِهٖ ؕHis slavesوَ مَاAnd notكَانَisلَنَاۤfor usاَنْthatنَّاْتِیَكُمْwe bring youبِسُلْطٰنٍan authorityاِلَّاexceptبِاِذْنِby the permission of Allahاللّٰهِ ؕby the permission of Allahوَ عَلَیAnd uponاللّٰهِAllahفَلْیَتَوَكَّلِso let put (their) trustالْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ the believers وَ مَاAnd whatلَنَاۤ(is) for usاَلَّاthat notنَتَوَكَّلَwe put our trustعَلَیuponاللّٰهِAllahوَ قَدْwhile certainlyهَدٰىنَاHe has guided usسُبُلَنَا ؕto our waysوَ لَنَصْبِرَنَّAnd surely we will bear with patienceعَلٰیonمَاۤwhatاٰذَیْتُمُوْنَا ؕharm you may cause usوَ عَلَیAnd uponاللّٰهِAllahفَلْیَتَوَكَّلِso let put (their) trustالْمُتَوَكِّلُوْنَ۠the ones who put (their) trust

Translation of Verse 7-12

7. And ˹remember˺ when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.'"

8. Moses added, "If you along with everyone on earth were to be ungrateful, then ˹know that˺ Allah is indeed Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy."

9. Have you not ˹already˺ received the stories of those who were before you: the people of Noah, 'Âd, Thamûd, and those after them? Only Allah knows how many they were. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they put their hands over their mouths ⁴⁷⁷ and said, "We totally reject what you have been sent with, and we are certainly in alarming doubt about what you are inviting us to."

10. Their messengers asked ˹them˺, "Is there any doubt about Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth? He is inviting you in order to forgive your sins, and delay your end until your appointed term." ⁴⁷⁸ They argued, "You are no more than humans like us! You ˹only˺ wish to turn us away from what our forefathers worshipped. So bring us some compelling proof."

11. Their messengers said to them, "We are ˹indeed˺ only humans like you, but Allah favours whoever He chooses of His servants. It is not for us to bring you any proof without Allah's permission. And in Allah let the believers put their trust.

12. Why should we not put our trust in Allah, when He has truly guided us to ˹the very best of˺ ways? Indeed, we will patiently endure whatever harm you may cause us. And in Allah let the faithful put their trust."

Commentary

477. This can mean that the disbelievers bit their own hands in rage, or they covered their own mouths mockingly, or that they put their hands over their messengers' mouths to silence them.

478. It is out of Allah's mercy that He does not hasten your punishment but delays your death until your destined time.
