Quran Text of Verse 139-182وَ اِنَّAnd indeedیُوْنُسَYunusلَمِنَ(was) surely ofالْمُرْسَلِیْنَؕthe Messengers اِذْWhenاَبَقَhe ran awayاِلَیtoالْفُلْكِthe shipالْمَشْحُوْنِۙladen فَسَاهَمَThen he drew lotsفَكَانَand wasمِنَofالْمُدْحَضِیْنَۚthe losers فَالْتَقَمَهُThen swallowed himالْحُوْتُthe fishوَ هُوَwhile heمُلِیْمٌ (was) blameworthy فَلَوْ لَاۤAnd if notاَنَّهٗthat heكَانَwasمِنَofالْمُسَبِّحِیْنَۙthose who glorify لَلَبِثَCertainly he (would have) remainedفِیْinبَطْنِهٖۤits bellyاِلٰیuntilیَوْمِthe Dayیُبْعَثُوْنَۚthey are resurrected فَنَبَذْنٰهُBut We cast himبِالْعَرَآءِonto the open shoreوَ هُوَwhile heسَقِیْمٌۚ(was) ill وَ اَنْۢبَتْنَاAnd We caused to growعَلَیْهِover himشَجَرَةًa plantمِّنْofیَّقْطِیْنٍۚgourd وَ اَرْسَلْنٰهُAnd We sent himاِلٰیtoمِائَةِa hundredاَلْفٍthousandاَوْorیَزِیْدُوْنَۚmore فَاٰمَنُوْاAnd they believedفَمَتَّعْنٰهُمْso We gave them enjoymentاِلٰیforحِیْنٍؕa while فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْThen ask themاَلِرَبِّكَDoes your Lordالْبَنَاتُ(have) daughtersوَ لَهُمُwhile for themالْبَنُوْنَۙ(are) sons اَمْOrخَلَقْنَاdid We createالْمَلٰٓىِٕكَةَthe Angelsاِنَاثًاfemalesوَّ هُمْwhile theyشٰهِدُوْنَ (were) witnesses اَلَاۤNo doubtاِنَّهُمْindeed theyمِّنْofاِفْكِهِمْtheir falsehoodلَیَقُوْلُوْنَۙ[they] say وَلَدَAllah has begottenاللّٰهُ ۙAllah has begottenوَ اِنَّهُمْand indeed, theyلَكٰذِبُوْنَ surely (are) liars اَصْطَفَیHas He chosenالْبَنَاتِ[the] daughtersعَلَیoverالْبَنِیْنَؕsons 37. As-Saffat Page 452مَاWhat is with youلَكُمْ ۫What is with youكَیْفَHowتَحْكُمُوْنَ you judge اَفَلَاThen will notتَذَكَّرُوْنَۚyou pay heed اَمْOrلَكُمْ(is) for youسُلْطٰنٌan authorityمُّبِیْنٌۙclear فَاْتُوْاThen bringبِكِتٰبِكُمْyour bookاِنْifكُنْتُمْyou areصٰدِقِیْنَ truthful وَ جَعَلُوْاAnd they have madeبَیْنَهٗbetween Himوَ بَیْنَand betweenالْجِنَّةِthe jinnنَسَبًا ؕa relationshipوَ لَقَدْbut certainlyعَلِمَتِknowالْجِنَّةُthe jinnاِنَّهُمْthat theyلَمُحْضَرُوْنَۙ(will) surely be brought سُبْحٰنَGlory beاللّٰهِ(to) Allahعَمَّاabove whatیَصِفُوْنَۙthey attribute اِلَّاExceptعِبَادَ(the) slavesاللّٰهِ(of) Allahالْمُخْلَصِیْنَ the chosen فَاِنَّكُمْSo indeed youوَ مَاand whatتَعْبُدُوْنَۙyou worship مَاۤNotاَنْتُمْyouعَلَیْهِfrom Himبِفٰتِنِیْنَۙcan tempt away (anyone) اِلَّاExceptمَنْwhoهُوَheصَالِ(is) to burnالْجَحِیْمِ (in) the Hellfire وَ مَاAnd notمِنَّاۤamong usاِلَّاexceptلَهٗfor himمَقَامٌ(is) a positionمَّعْلُوْمٌۙknown وَّ اِنَّاAnd indeed weلَنَحْنُsurely [we]الصَّآفُّوْنَۚstand in rows وَ اِنَّاAnd indeed weلَنَحْنُsurely [we]الْمُسَبِّحُوْنَ glorify (Allah) وَ اِنْAnd indeedكَانُوْاthey used (to)لَیَقُوْلُوْنَۙsay لَوْIfاَنَّthatعِنْدَنَاwe hadذِكْرًاa reminderمِّنَfromالْاَوَّلِیْنَۙthe former (people) لَكُنَّاCertainly we (would) have beenعِبَادَslavesاللّٰهِ(of) Allahالْمُخْلَصِیْنَ the chosen فَكَفَرُوْاBut they disbelievedبِهٖin itفَسَوْفَso soonیَعْلَمُوْنَ they will know وَ لَقَدْAnd verilyسَبَقَتْhas precededكَلِمَتُنَاOur Wordلِعِبَادِنَاfor Our slavesالْمُرْسَلِیْنَۚۖthe Messengers اِنَّهُمْIndeed theyلَهُمُsurely theyالْمَنْصُوْرُوْنَ۪(would be) the victorious وَ اِنَّAnd indeedجُنْدَنَاOur hostلَهُمُsurely theyالْغٰلِبُوْنَ (will be) those who overcome فَتَوَلَّSo turn awayعَنْهُمْfrom themحَتّٰیforحِیْنٍۙa time وَّ اَبْصِرْهُمْAnd see themفَسَوْفَso soonیُبْصِرُوْنَ they will see اَفَبِعَذَابِنَاThen is (it) for Our punishmentیَسْتَعْجِلُوْنَ they hasten فَاِذَاBut whenنَزَلَit descendsبِسَاحَتِهِمْin their territoryفَسَآءَthen evil (will be)صَبَاحُ(the) morningالْمُنْذَرِیْنَ (for) those who were warned وَ تَوَلَّSo turn awayعَنْهُمْfrom themحَتّٰیforحِیْنٍۙa time وَّ اَبْصِرْAnd seeفَسَوْفَso soonیُبْصِرُوْنَ they will see سُبْحٰنَGloryرَبِّكَ(be to) your Lordرَبِّ(the) Lordالْعِزَّةِ(of) Honorعَمَّاabove whatیَصِفُوْنَۚthey attribute وَ سَلٰمٌAnd peace beعَلَیuponالْمُرْسَلِیْنَۚthe Messengers وَ الْحَمْدُAnd all praiseلِلّٰهِ(be) to Allahرَبِّ(the) Lordالْعٰلَمِیْنَ۠(of) the worlds

Translation of Verse 139-182

139. And Jonah was indeed one of the messengers.

140. ˹Remember˺ when he fled to the overloaded ship.

141. Then ˹to save it from sinking,˺ he drew straws ˹with other passengers˺. He lost ˹and was thrown overboard˺.

142. Then the whale engulfed him while he was blameworthy. ⁹²⁷

143. Had he not ˹constantly˺ glorified ˹Allah˺, ⁹²⁸

144. he would have certainly remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection. ⁹²⁹

145. But We cast him onto the open ˹shore˺, ˹totally˺ worn out,

146. and caused a squash plant to grow over him. ⁹³⁰

147. We ˹later˺ sent him ˹back˺ to ˹his city of˺ at least one hundred thousand people,

148. who then believed ˹in him˺, so We allowed them enjoyment for a while.

149. Ask them ˹O Prophet˺ if your Lord has daughters, ⁹³¹ while the pagans ˹prefer to˺ have sons.

150. Or ˹ask them˺ if We created the angels as females right before their eyes.

151. Indeed, it is one of their ˹outrageous˺ fabrications to say,

152. "Allah has children." They are simply liars.

153. Has He chosen daughters over sons? ⁹³²

154. What is the matter with you? How do you judge?

155. Will you not then be mindful?

156. Or do you have ˹any˺ compelling proof?

157. Then bring ˹us˺ your scripture, if what you say is true!

158. They have also established a ˹marital˺ relationship between Him and the jinn. Yet the jinn ˹themselves˺ know well that such people will certainly be brought ˹for punishment˺. ⁹³³

159. Glorified is Allah far above what they claim!

160. But not the chosen servants of Allah.

161. Surely you ˹pagans˺ and whatever ˹idols˺ you worship

162. can never lure ˹anyone˺ away from Him

163. except those ˹destined˺ to burn in Hell.

164. ˹The angels respond,˺ "There is not one of us without an assigned station ˹of worship˺.

165. We are indeed the ones lined up in ranks ˹for Allah˺.

166. And we are indeed the ones ˹constantly˺ glorifying ˹His praise˺."

167. They certainly used to say,

168. "If only we had a Reminder like ˹those of˺ earlier peoples, ⁹³⁴

169. we would have truly been Allah's devoted servants."

170. But ˹now˺ they reject it, so they will soon know.

171. Our Word has already gone forth to Our servants, the messengers,

172. that they would surely be helped,

173. and that Our forces will certainly prevail.

174. So turn away from the deniers for a while ˹O Prophet˺.

175. You will see ˹what will happen to˺ them, and they too will see!

176. Do they ˹really˺ wish to hasten Our punishment?

177. Yet when it descends upon them: ⁹³⁵ how evil will that morning be for those who had been warned!

178. And turn away from them for a while.

179. You will see, and they too will see!

180. Glorified is your Lord-the Lord of Honour and Power-above what they claim!

181. Peace be upon the messengers.

182. And praise be to Allah-Lord of all worlds.

Commentary

927. For abandoning his city without Allah's permission.

928. Before being swallowed and while inside the whale ( see 21:87). The lesson is: good deeds are of great help during difficult times.

929. The belly of the whale would have become his grave.

930. The squash plant provided Jonah with shade and repelled harmful insects.

931. Some pagan Arabs believed that the angels were Allah's daughters. Some of them were ashamed to have daughters and took pride in their own sons.

932. Both sexes are equal before Allah, so the verse questions pagan chauvinism.

933. Or "Yet the jinn know well that they themselves will be brought ˹for judgment˺." This is based on the claim of some pagan Arabs that the angels are Allah's daughters through female jinn.

934. The "Reminder" mentioned here refers to Scriptures such as the Torah and the Gospel. It is commonly used in the Quran as another name for Islam's holy book.
