Quran Text of Verse 1-2752. At-Turبِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِوَ الطُّوْرِۙBy the Mount وَ كِتٰبٍAnd by (the) Bookمَّسْطُوْرٍۙwritten فِیْInرَقٍّparchmentمَّنْشُوْرٍۙunrolled وَّ الْبَیْتِBy the Houseالْمَعْمُوْرِۙfrequented وَ السَّقْفِBy the roofالْمَرْفُوْعِۙraised high وَ الْبَحْرِBy the seaالْمَسْجُوْرِۙfilled اِنَّIndeedعَذَابَ(the) punishmentرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordلَوَاقِعٌۙ(will) surely occur مَّاNotلَهٗfor itمِنْanyدَافِعٍۙpreventer یَّوْمَ(On the) Dayتَمُوْرُwill shakeالسَّمَآءُthe heavenمَوْرًاۙ(with violent) shake وَّ تَسِیْرُAnd will move awayالْجِبَالُthe mountainsسَیْرًاؕ(with an awful) movement فَوَیْلٌThen woeیَّوْمَىِٕذٍthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَۙto the deniers الَّذِیْنَWhoهُمْ[they]فِیْinخَوْضٍ(vain) discourseیَّلْعَبُوْنَۘare playing یَوْمَ(The) Dayیُدَعُّوْنَthey will be thrustاِلٰی(in)toنَارِ(the) Fireجَهَنَّمَ(of) Hellدَعًّاؕ(with) a thrust هٰذِهِThisالنَّارُ(is) the Fireالَّتِیْwhichكُنْتُمْyou used (to)بِهَا[of it]تُكَذِّبُوْنَ deny 52. At-Tur Page 524اَفَسِحْرٌThen is this magicهٰذَاۤThen is this magicاَمْorاَنْتُمْyouلَا(do) notتُبْصِرُوْنَۚsee اِصْلَوْهَاBurn in itفَاصْبِرُوْۤاthen be patientاَوْorلَا(do) notتَصْبِرُوْا ۚbe patientسَوَآءٌ(it is) sameعَلَیْكُمْ ؕfor youاِنَّمَاOnlyتُجْزَوْنَyou are being recompensedمَا(for) whatكُنْتُمْyou used (to)تَعْمَلُوْنَ do اِنَّIndeedالْمُتَّقِیْنَthe righteousفِیْ(will be) inجَنّٰتٍGardensوَّ نَعِیْمٍۙand pleasure فٰكِهِیْنَEnjoyingبِمَاۤin whatاٰتٰىهُمْhas given themرَبُّهُمْ ۚtheir Lordوَ وَقٰىهُمْand protected themرَبُّهُمْtheir Lordعَذَابَ(from the) punishmentالْجَحِیْمِ (of) Hellfire كُلُوْاEatوَ اشْرَبُوْاand drinkهَنِیْٓـًٔۢا(in) satisfactionبِمَاfor whatكُنْتُمْyou used (to)تَعْمَلُوْنَۙdo مُتَّكِـِٕیْنَRecliningعَلٰیonسُرُرٍthronesمَّصْفُوْفَةٍ ۚlined upوَ زَوَّجْنٰهُمْand We will marry themبِحُوْرٍto fair onesعِیْنٍ with large eyes وَ الَّذِیْنَAnd those whoاٰمَنُوْاbelievedوَ اتَّبَعَتْهُمْand followed themذُرِّیَّتُهُمْtheir offspringبِاِیْمَانٍin faithاَلْحَقْنَاWe will joinبِهِمْwith themذُرِّیَّتَهُمْtheir offspringوَ مَاۤand notاَلَتْنٰهُمْWe will deprive themمِّنْofعَمَلِهِمْtheir deedsمِّنْ(in) anyشَیْءٍ ؕthingكُلُّEveryامْرِئٍۭpersonبِمَاfor whatكَسَبَhe earnedرَهِیْنٌ (is) pledged وَ اَمْدَدْنٰهُمْAnd We will provide themبِفَاكِهَةٍwith fruitوَّ لَحْمٍand meatمِّمَّاfrom whatیَشْتَهُوْنَ they desire یَتَنَازَعُوْنَThey will pass to one anotherفِیْهَاthereinكَاْسًاa cupلَّاnoلَغْوٌill speechفِیْهَاthereinوَ لَاand noتَاْثِیْمٌ sin وَ یَطُوْفُAnd will circulateعَلَیْهِمْamong themغِلْمَانٌboysلَّهُمْfor themكَاَنَّهُمْas if they (were)لُؤْلُؤٌpearlsمَّكْنُوْنٌ well-protected وَ اَقْبَلَAnd will approachبَعْضُهُمْsome of themعَلٰیtoبَعْضٍothersیَّتَسَآءَلُوْنَ inquiring قَالُوْۤاThey will sayاِنَّاIndeed weكُنَّا[we] wereقَبْلُbeforeفِیْۤamongاَهْلِنَاour familiesمُشْفِقِیْنَ fearful فَمَنَّBut Allah conferred favorاللّٰهُBut Allah conferred favorعَلَیْنَاupon usوَ وَقٰىنَاand protected usعَذَابَ(from the) punishmentالسَّمُوْمِ (of) the Scorching Fire

Surah Introduction

This Meccan sûrah takes its name from verse 1, where Allah swears by Mount Ṭûr, among other things, that the Day of Judgment is inevitable. The punishment of those skeptical of judgment is described, followed by a detailed description of the reward of the believers along with their offspring (verses17-28). Atheism is also rejected (verses 25-36). The Prophet ( ﷺ ) is reassured of Allah's support, while the pagan beliefs and arguments are refuted both in this sûrah and the next.

Translation of Verse 1-271. In the Name of Allah-the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

1. By Mount Ṭûr! ¹¹⁰⁶

2. And by the Book written

3. on open pages ˹for all to read˺! ¹¹⁰⁷

4. And by the ˹Sacred˺ House frequently visited! ¹¹⁰⁸

5. And by the canopy raised ˹high˺!

6. And by the seas set on fire! ¹¹⁰⁹

7. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord will come to pass-

8. none will avert it-

9. on the Day the heavens will be shaken violently,

10. and the mountains will be blown away entirely.

11. Then woe on that Day to the deniers-

12. those who amuse themselves with falsehood!

13. ˹It is˺ the Day they will be fiercely shoved into the Fire of Hell.

14. ˹They will be told,˺ "This is the Fire which you used to deny.

15. Is this magic, or do you not see?

16. Burn in it! It is the same whether you endure ˹it˺ patiently or not. ¹¹¹⁰ You are only rewarded for what you used to do."

17. Indeed, the righteous will be in Gardens and bliss,

18. enjoying whatever their Lord will have granted them. And their Lord will have protected them from the torment of the Hellfire.

19. ˹They will be told,˺ "Eat and drink happily for what you used to do."

20. They will be reclining on thrones, ˹neatly˺ lined up ˹facing each other˺. And We will pair them to maidens with gorgeous eyes.

21. As for those who believe and whose descendants follow them in faith, We will elevate their descendants to their rank, never discounting anything ˹of the reward˺ of their deeds. Every person will reap only what they sowed. ¹¹¹¹

22. And We will ˹continually˺ provide them with whatever fruit or meat they desire.

23. They will pass around to each other a drink ˹of pure wine,˺ which leads to no idle talk or sinfulness.

24. And they will be waited on by their youthful servants like spotless pearls.

25. They will turn to one another inquisitively. ¹¹¹²

26. They will say, "Before ˹this reward˺ we used to be in awe ˹of Allah˺ in the midst of our people.

27. So Allah has graced us and protected us from the torment of ˹Hell's˺ scorching heat.

Commentary

1106. Where Moses ( ﷺ ) communicated with Allah.

1107. i.e., the Quran.

1108. This is either the Sacred House in Mecca, which is frequented by pilgrims, or a sanctuary in Heaven, which is frequented by angels.

1109. The seas and oceans will be on fire on Judgment Day.

1110. One gets the reward for being patient in difficult times in this world. As for the Hereafter, those who suffer patiently in Hell will not be rewarded for their patience.

1111. Meaning, no one will carry the burden of another's sins.

1112. It is assumed that they will ask each other about their lives in the world and what led them to Paradise.
