Quran Text of Verse 75-96فَلَاۤBut nayاُقْسِمُI swearبِمَوٰقِعِby settingالنُّجُوْمِۙ(of) the stars وَ اِنَّهٗAnd indeed itلَقَسَمٌ(is) surely an oathلَّوْifتَعْلَمُوْنَyou knowعَظِیْمٌۙgreat 56. Al-Waqi'ah Page 537اِنَّهٗIndeed itلَقُرْاٰنٌ(is) surely a Quranكَرِیْمٌۙnoble فِیْInكِتٰبٍa Bookمَّكْنُوْنٍۙwell-guarded لَّاNoneیَمَسُّهٗۤtouch itاِلَّاexceptالْمُطَهَّرُوْنَؕthe purified تَنْزِیْلٌA Revelationمِّنْfromرَّبِّ(the) Lordالْعٰلَمِیْنَ (of) the worlds اَفَبِهٰذَاThen is it to thisالْحَدِیْثِstatementاَنْتُمْthat youمُّدْهِنُوْنَۙ(are) indifferent وَ تَجْعَلُوْنَAnd you makeرِزْقَكُمْyour provisionاَنَّكُمْthat youتُكَذِّبُوْنَ deny فَلَوْ لَاۤThen why notاِذَاwhenبَلَغَتِit reachesالْحُلْقُوْمَۙthe throat وَ اَنْتُمْAnd youحِیْنَىِٕذٍ(at) that timeتَنْظُرُوْنَۙlook on وَ نَحْنُAnd Weاَقْرَبُ(are) nearerاِلَیْهِto himمِنْكُمْthan youوَ لٰكِنْbutلَّاyou (do) not seeتُبْصِرُوْنَ you (do) not see فَلَوْ لَاۤThen why notاِنْifكُنْتُمْyou areغَیْرَnotمَدِیْنِیْنَۙto be recompensed تَرْجِعُوْنَهَاۤBring it backاِنْifكُنْتُمْyou areصٰدِقِیْنَ truthful فَاَمَّاۤThenاِنْifكَانَhe wasمِنَofالْمُقَرَّبِیْنَۙthose brought near فَرَوْحٌThen restوَّ رَیْحَانٌ ۙ۬and bountyوَّ جَنَّتُand a Gardenنَعِیْمٍ (of) Pleasure وَ اَمَّاۤAndاِنْifكَانَhe wasمِنْofاَصْحٰبِ(the) companionsالْیَمِیْنِۙ(of) the right فَسَلٰمٌThen peaceلَّكَfor youمِنْ[from]اَصْحٰبِ(the) companionsالْیَمِیْنِؕ(of) the right وَ اَمَّاۤButاِنْifكَانَhe wasمِنَofالْمُكَذِّبِیْنَthe deniersالضَّآلِّیْنَۙthe astray فَنُزُلٌThen hospitalityمِّنْofحَمِیْمٍۙ(the) scalding water وَّ تَصْلِیَةُAnd burningجَحِیْمٍ (in) Hellfire اِنَّIndeedهٰذَاthisلَهُوَsurely itحَقُّ(is the) truthالْیَقِیْنِۚcertain فَسَبِّحْSo glorifyبِاسْمِ(the) nameرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordالْعَظِیْمِ۠the Most Great

Translation of Verse 75-96

75. So I do swear by the positions of the stars-

76. and this, if only you knew, is indeed a great oath-

77. that this is truly a noble Quran,

78. in a well-preserved Record, ¹¹⁶³

79. touched by none except the purified ˹angels˺. ¹¹⁶⁴

80. ˹It is˺ a revelation from the Lord of all worlds.

81. How can you then take this message lightly,

82. and repay ˹Allah for˺ your provisions with denial? ¹¹⁶⁵

83. Why then ˹are you helpless˺ when the soul ˹of a dying person˺ reaches ˹their˺ throat,

84. while you are looking on?

85. And We are nearer to such a person than you, but you cannot see.

86. Now, if you are not subject to Our Will ˹as you claim˺,

87. bring that soul back, if what you say is true.

88. So, if the deceased is one of those brought near ˹to Us˺,

89. then ˹such a person will have˺ serenity, fragrance, ¹¹⁶⁶ and a Garden of Bliss.

90. And if the deceased is one of the people of the right,

91. then ˹they will be told,˺ "Greetings to you from the people of the right."

92. But if such person is one of the misguided deniers,

93. then their accommodation will be boiling water ˹to drink˺

94. and burning in Hellfire.

95. Indeed, this is the absolute truth.

96. So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Greatest.

Commentary

1163. See 43:4.

1164. This verse refutes the pagan claim that the Quran was sent down by devils ( see 26:210-212). Based on this verse, many jurists maintain that a Muslim should perform ablutions before reading the Quran.

1165. Some pagans believed that rain was caused by some stars.

1166. lit., fragrant basil. Throughout the Quran, Paradise is described as being pleasant to the eye, the heart, and the ear. This verse emphasizes the scent as well.
