Surah Introduction

It is reported that the revelation stopped for a while after the initial sûrahs of the Quran, so some Meccan pagans started to mock the Prophet ( ﷺ ) , saying that Allah has become neglectful and hateful of him ( ﷺ ) . Therefore, this Meccan sûrah was revealed to refute their false allegations and remind the Prophet ( ﷺ ) of some of Allah's favours.

Translation of Verse 1-11
1. In the Name of Allah-the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

1. By the morning sunlight,

2. and the night when it falls still!

3. Your Lord ˹O Prophet˺ has not abandoned you, nor has He become hateful ˹of you˺.

4. And the next life is certainly far better for you than this one.

5. And ˹surely˺ your Lord will give so much to you that you will be pleased.

6. Did He not find you as an orphan then sheltered you?

7. Did He not find you unguided then guided you?

8. And did He not find you needy then satisfied your needs?

9. So do not oppress the orphan,

10. nor repulse the beggar. 1314

11. And proclaim the blessings of your Lord.

Commentary

1314. And, by extension, anyone asking for help.
