Quran Text of Verse 69-79وَ لَمَّاAnd whenدَخَلُوْاthey enteredعَلٰیuponیُوْسُفَYusufاٰوٰۤیhe tookاِلَیْهِto himselfاَخَاهُhis brotherقَالَHe saidاِنِّیْۤIndeed Iاَنَا[I] amاَخُوْكَyour brotherفَلَاso (do) notتَبْتَىِٕسْgrieveبِمَاfor whatكَانُوْاthey used (to)یَعْمَلُوْنَ do 12. Yusuf Page 244فَلَمَّاSo whenجَهَّزَهُمْhe had furnished themبِجَهَازِهِمْwith their suppliesجَعَلَhe putالسِّقَایَةَthe drinking cupفِیْinرَحْلِthe bagاَخِیْهِ(of) his brotherثُمَّThenاَذَّنَcalled outمُؤَذِّنٌan announcerاَیَّتُهَاO youالْعِیْرُ(in) the caravan!اِنَّكُمْIndeed youلَسٰرِقُوْنَ surely (are) thieves قَالُوْاThey saidوَ اَقْبَلُوْاturning towardsعَلَیْهِمْthemمَّا ذَاWhat (is it)تَفْقِدُوْنَ you miss قَالُوْاThey saidنَفْقِدُWe are missingصُوَاعَ(the) cupالْمَلِكِ(of) the kingوَ لِمَنْAnd for (one) whoجَآءَbringsبِهٖitحِمْلُ(is) a loadبَعِیْرٍ(of) a camelوَّ اَنَاand Iبِهٖfor itزَعِیْمٌ (is) responsible قَالُوْاThey saidتَاللّٰهِBy Allahلَقَدْcertainlyعَلِمْتُمْyou knowمَّاnotجِئْنَاwe cameلِنُفْسِدَthat we cause corruptionفِیinالْاَرْضِthe landوَ مَاand notكُنَّاwe areسٰرِقِیْنَ thieves قَالُوْاThey saidفَمَاThen whatجَزَآؤُهٗۤ(will be the) recompense (of) itاِنْifكُنْتُمْyou areكٰذِبِیْنَ liars قَالُوْاThey saidجَزَآؤُهٗIts recompenseمَنْ(is that one) whoوُّجِدَit is foundفِیْinرَحْلِهٖhis bagفَهُوَthen heجَزَآؤُهٗ ؕ(will be) his recompenseكَذٰلِكَThusنَجْزِی(do) we recompenseالظّٰلِمِیْنَ the wrongdoers فَبَدَاَSo he beganبِاَوْعِیَتِهِمْwith their bagsقَبْلَbeforeوِعَآءِ(the) bagاَخِیْهِ(of) his brotherثُمَّthenاسْتَخْرَجَهَاhe brought it outمِنْfromوِّعَآءِ(the) bagاَخِیْهِ ؕ(of) his brotherكَذٰلِكَThusكِدْنَا(did) We planلِیُوْسُفَ ؕfor YusufمَاHe could notكَانَHe could notلِیَاْخُذَtakeاَخَاهُhis brotherفِیْbyدِیْنِthe lawالْمَلِكِ(of) the kingاِلَّاۤexceptاَنْthatیَّشَآءَAllah willedاللّٰهُ ؕAllah willedنَرْفَعُWe raiseدَرَجٰتٍ(in) degreesمَّنْwhomنَّشَآءُ ؕWe willوَ فَوْقَbut overكُلِّeveryذِیْpossessorعِلْمٍ(of) knowledgeعَلِیْمٌ (is) the All-Knower قَالُوْۤاThey saidاِنْIfیَّسْرِقْhe stealsفَقَدْthen verilyسَرَقَstoleاَخٌa brotherلَّهٗof hisمِنْbeforeقَبْلُ ۚbeforeفَاَسَرَّهَاBut Yusuf kept it secretیُوْسُفُBut Yusuf kept it secretفِیْwithinنَفْسِهٖhimselfوَ لَمْand (did) notیُبْدِهَاreveal itلَهُمْ ۚto themقَالَHe saidاَنْتُمْYouشَرٌّ(are the) worseمَّكَانًا ۚ(in) positionوَ اللّٰهُand Allahاَعْلَمُknows bestبِمَاof whatتَصِفُوْنَ you describe قَالُوْاThey saidیٰۤاَیُّهَاOالْعَزِیْزُAziz!اِنَّIndeedلَهٗۤhe hasاَبًاa fatherشَیْخًاoldكَبِیْرًا[great]فَخُذْso takeاَحَدَنَاone of usمَكَانَهٗ ۚ(in) his placeاِنَّاIndeed weنَرٰىكَ[we] see youمِنَofالْمُحْسِنِیْنَ the good-doers 12. Yusuf Page 245قَالَHe saidمَعَاذَAllah forbidاللّٰهِAllah forbidاَنْthatنَّاْخُذَwe takeاِلَّاexceptمَنْ(one) whoوَّجَدْنَاwe foundمَتَاعَنَاour possessionعِنْدَهٗۤ ۙwith himاِنَّاۤIndeed, weاِذًاthenلَّظٰلِمُوْنَ۠surely (would be) wrongdoers

Translation of Verse 69-79

69. When they entered Joseph's presence, he called his brother ˹Benjamin˺ aside, and confided ˹to him˺, "I am indeed your brother ˹Joseph˺! So do not feel distressed about what they have been doing."

70. When Joseph had provided them with supplies, he slipped the royal cup into his brother's bag. Then a herald cried, "O people of the caravan! You must be thieves!"

71. They asked, turning back, "What have you lost?"

72. The herald ˹along with the guards˺ replied, "We have lost the King's measuring cup. And whoever brings it will be awarded a camel-load ˹of grain˺. I guarantee it."

73. Joseph's brothers replied, "By Allah! You know well that we did not come to cause trouble in the land, nor are we thieves."

74. Joseph's men asked, "What should be the price for theft, if you are lying?"

75. Joseph's brothers responded, "The price will be ˹the enslavement of˺ the one in whose bag the cup is found. That is how we punish the wrongdoers."

76. Joseph began searching their bags before that of his brother ˹Benjamin˺, then brought it out of Benjamin's bag. This is how We inspired Joseph to plan. He could not have taken his brother under the King's law, but Allah had so willed. We elevate in rank whoever We will. But above those ranking in knowledge is the One All- Knowing.

77. ˹To distance themselves,˺ Joseph's brothers argued, "If he has stolen, so did his ˹full˺ brother before." ⁴⁵⁶ But Joseph suppressed his outrage-revealing nothing to them-and said ˹to himself˺, "You are in such an evil position, ⁴⁵⁷ and Allah knows best ˹the truth of˺ what you claim."

78. They appealed, "O Chief Minister! He has a very old father, so take one of us instead. We surely see you as one of the good-doers."

79. Joseph responded, "Allah forbid that we should take other than the one with whom we found our property. Otherwise, we would surely be unjust."

Commentary

456. Joseph was falsely accused of theft when he was young.

457. He meant: I did not steal anything, nor did my brother ˹Benjamin˺. You are the real thieves; you stole me from my father and threw me into the well.
