Quran Text of Verse 90-104وَ لَقَدْAnd verilyقَالَ(had) saidلَهُمْto themهٰرُوْنُHarunمِنْbeforeقَبْلُbeforeیٰقَوْمِO my peopleاِنَّمَاOnlyفُتِنْتُمْyou are being testedبِهٖ ۚby itوَ اِنَّand indeedرَبَّكُمُyour Lordالرَّحْمٰنُ(is) the Most Graciousفَاتَّبِعُوْنِیْso follow meوَ اَطِیْعُوْۤاand obeyاَمْرِیْ my order قَالُوْاThey saidلَنْNeverنَّبْرَحَwe will ceaseعَلَیْهِbeing devoted to itعٰكِفِیْنَbeing devoted to itحَتّٰیuntilیَرْجِعَreturnsاِلَیْنَاto usمُوْسٰی Musa قَالَHe saidیٰهٰرُوْنُO Harun!مَاWhatمَنَعَكَprevented youاِذْwhenرَاَیْتَهُمْyou saw themضَلُّوْۤاۙgoing astray اَلَّاThat notتَتَّبِعَنِ ؕyou follow meاَفَعَصَیْتَThen have you disobeyedاَمْرِیْ my order قَالَHe saidیَبْنَؤُمَّO son of my motherلَا(Do) notتَاْخُذْseize (me)بِلِحْیَتِیْby my beardوَ لَاand notبِرَاْسِیْ ۚby my headاِنِّیْIndeed, Iخَشِیْتُ[I] fearedاَنْthatتَقُوْلَyou would sayفَرَّقْتَYou caused divisionبَیْنَbetweenبَنِیْۤ(the) Children of Israelاِسْرَآءِیْلَ(the) Children of Israelوَ لَمْand notتَرْقُبْyou respectقَوْلِیْ my word قَالَHe saidفَمَاThen whatخَطْبُكَ(is) your caseیٰسَامِرِیُّ O Samiri قَالَHe saidبَصُرْتُI perceivedبِمَاwhatلَمْnotیَبْصُرُوْاthey perceiveبِهٖin itفَقَبَضْتُso I tookقَبْضَةًa handfulمِّنْfromاَثَرِ(the) trackالرَّسُوْلِ(of) the Messengerفَنَبَذْتُهَاthen threw itوَ كَذٰلِكَand thusسَوَّلَتْsuggestedلِیْto meنَفْسِیْ my soul قَالَHe saidفَاذْهَبْThen goفَاِنَّAnd indeedلَكَfor youفِیinالْحَیٰوةِthe lifeاَنْthatتَقُوْلَyou will sayلَا(Do) notمِسَاسَ ۪touch."وَ اِنَّAnd indeedلَكَfor youمَوْعِدًا(is) an appointmentلَّنْneverتُخْلَفَهٗ ۚyou will fail to (keep) itوَ انْظُرْAnd lookاِلٰۤیatاِلٰهِكَyour godالَّذِیْthat whichظَلْتَyou have remainedعَلَیْهِto itعَاكِفًا ؕdevotedلَنُحَرِّقَنَّهٗSurely we will burn itثُمَّthenلَنَنْسِفَنَّهٗcertainly we will scatter itفِیinالْیَمِّthe seaنَسْفًا (in) particles اِنَّمَاۤOnlyاِلٰهُكُمُyour Godاللّٰهُ(is) Allahالَّذِیْthe Oneلَاۤ(there is) noاِلٰهَgodاِلَّاbutهُوَ ؕHeوَسِعَHe has encompassedكُلَّallشَیْءٍthingsعِلْمًا (in) knowledge 20. Taha Page 319كَذٰلِكَThusنَقُصُّWe relateعَلَیْكَto youمِنْfromاَنْۢبَآءِ(the) newsمَا(of) whatقَدْhas precededسَبَقَ ۚhas precededوَ قَدْAnd certainlyاٰتَیْنٰكَWe have given youمِنْfromلَّدُنَّاUsذِكْرًاۖۚa Reminder مَنْWhoeverاَعْرَضَturns awayعَنْهُfrom itفَاِنَّهٗthen indeed heیَحْمِلُwill bearیَوْمَ(on the) Dayالْقِیٰمَةِ(of) Resurrectionوِزْرًاۙa burden خٰلِدِیْنَAbiding foreverفِیْهِ ؕin itوَ سَآءَand evilلَهُمْfor themیَوْمَ(on the) Dayالْقِیٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrectionحِمْلًاۙ(as) a load یَّوْمَ(The) Dayیُنْفَخُwill be blownفِیinالصُّوْرِthe Trumpetوَ نَحْشُرُand We will gatherالْمُجْرِمِیْنَthe criminalsیَوْمَىِٕذٍthat Dayزُرْقًاۚۖblue-eyed یَّتَخَافَتُوْنَThey are murmuringبَیْنَهُمْamong themselvesاِنْNotلَّبِثْتُمْyou remainedاِلَّاexcept (for)عَشْرًا ten نَحْنُWeاَعْلَمُknow bestبِمَاwhatیَقُوْلُوْنَthey will sayاِذْwhenیَقُوْلُwill sayاَمْثَلُهُمْ(the) best of themطَرِیْقَةً(in) conductاِنْNotلَّبِثْتُمْyou remainedاِلَّاexcept (for)یَوْمًا۠a day

Translation of Verse 90-104

90. Aaron had already warned them beforehand, "O my people! You are only being tested by this, for indeed your ˹one true˺ Lord is the Most Compassionate. So follow me and obey my orders."

91. They replied, "We will not cease to worship it until Moses returns to us."

92. Moses scolded ˹his brother˺, "O Aaron! What prevented you, when you saw them going astray,

93. from following after me? How could you disobey my orders?" ⁶⁰²

94. Aaron pleaded, "O son of my mother! Do not seize me by my beard or ˹the hair of˺ my head. I really feared that you would say, 'You have caused division among the Children of Israel, and did not observe my word.'"

95. Moses then asked, "What did you think you were doing, O Sâmiri?"

96. He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful ˹of dust˺ from the hoof-prints of ˹the horse of˺ the messenger-angel ˹Gabriel˺ then cast it ˹on the moulded calf˺. This is what my lower-self tempted me into." ⁶⁰³

97. Moses said, "Go away then! And for ˹the rest of your˺ life you will surely be crying, 'Do not touch ˹me˺!' ⁶⁰⁴ Then you will certainly have a fate ⁶⁰⁵ that you cannot escape. Now look at your god to which you have been devoted: we will burn it up, then scatter it in the sea completely."

98. ˹Then Moses addressed his people,˺ "Your only god is Allah, there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He encompasses everything in ˹His˺ knowledge."

99. This is how We relate to you ˹O Prophet˺ some of the stories of the past. And We have certainly granted you a Reminder ⁶⁰⁶ from Us.

100. Whoever turns away from it will surely bear the burden ˹of sin˺ on the Day of Judgment,

101. suffering its consequences forever. What an evil burden they will carry on Judgment Day!

102. ˹Beware of˺ the Day the Trumpet will be blown, ⁶⁰⁷ and We will gather the wicked on that Day blue-faced ˹from horror and thirst˺. ⁶⁰⁸

103. They will whisper among themselves, "You stayed no more than ten days ˹on the earth˺."

104. We know best what they will say-the most reasonable of them will say, "You stayed no more than a day."

Commentary

602. Moses' orders are mentioned in 7:142.

603. This verse could also be translated as follows: "I had an insight which they did not have, then grasped some knowledge from the messenger ˹Moses˺, but ˹later˺ threw it away. This is what my lower-self tempted me to do." According to many Quran commentators, while Moses and the Children of Israel were crossing the sea to escape abuse by Pharaoh and his people, the Sâmiri saw Gabriel on a horse leading the way, and every time the horse touched the ground, it turned green. So the Sâmiri took a handful of dust from the hoof-prints of the horse, and later tossed it at the calf so it started to make a lowing sound.
