Sad Page 455وَ مَاAnd notخَلَقْنَاWe createdالسَّمَآءَthe heavenوَ الْاَرْضَand the earthوَ مَاand whateverبَیْنَهُمَا(is) between themبَاطِلًا ؕwithout purposeذٰلِكَThatظَنُّ(is the) assumptionالَّذِیْنَ(of) those whoكَفَرُوْا ۚdisbelieveفَوَیْلٌSo woeلِّلَّذِیْنَto thoseكَفَرُوْاwho disbelieveمِنَfromالنَّارِؕthe Fire اَمْOrنَجْعَلُshould We treatالَّذِیْنَthose whoاٰمَنُوْاbelieveوَ عَمِلُواand doالصّٰلِحٰتِrighteous deedsكَالْمُفْسِدِیْنَlike those who spread corruptionفِیinالْاَرْضِ ؗthe earthاَمْOrنَجْعَلُshould We treatالْمُتَّقِیْنَthe piousكَالْفُجَّارِ like the wicked كِتٰبٌ(This is) a BookاَنْزَلْنٰهُWe have revealed itاِلَیْكَto youمُبٰرَكٌblessedلِّیَدَّبَّرُوْۤاthat they may ponderاٰیٰتِهٖ(over) its Versesوَ لِیَتَذَكَّرَand may be remindedاُولُواthose of understandingالْاَلْبَابِ those of understanding وَ وَهَبْنَاAnd We gaveلِدَاوٗدَto Dawoodسُلَیْمٰنَ ؕSulaimanنِعْمَan excellentالْعَبْدُ ؕslaveاِنَّهٗۤIndeed heاَوَّابٌؕwas one who repeatedly turned اِذْWhenعُرِضَwere displayedعَلَیْهِto himبِالْعَشِیِّin the afternoonالصّٰفِنٰتُexcellent bred steedsالْجِیَادُۙexcellent bred steeds فَقَالَAnd he saidاِنِّیْۤIndeed Iاَحْبَبْتُ[I] preferredحُبَّ(the) loveالْخَیْرِ(of) the goodعَنْforذِكْرِ(the) remembranceرَبِّیْ ۚ(of) my LordحَتّٰیUntilتَوَارَتْthey were hiddenبِالْحِجَابِۥin the veil رُدُّوْهَاReturn themعَلَیَّ ؕto meفَطَفِقَThen he beganمَسْحًۢاto pass (his hand)بِالسُّوْقِover the legsوَ الْاَعْنَاقِ and the necks وَ لَقَدْAnd certainlyفَتَنَّاWe triedسُلَیْمٰنَSulaimanوَ اَلْقَیْنَاand We placedعَلٰیonكُرْسِیِّهٖhis throneجَسَدًاa bodyثُمَّthenاَنَابَ he turned قَالَHe saidرَبِّO my LordاغْفِرْForgiveلِیْmeوَهَبْand grantلِیْmeمُلْكًاa kingdomلَّاnotیَنْۢبَغِیْ(will) belongلِاَحَدٍto anyoneمِّنْۢafter meبَعْدِیْ ۚafter meاِنَّكَIndeed, Youاَنْتَ[You]الْوَهَّابُ (are) the Bestower فَسَخَّرْنَاThen We subjectedلَهُto himالرِّیْحَthe windتَجْرِیْto flowبِاَمْرِهٖby his commandرُخَآءًgentlyحَیْثُwhereverاَصَابَۙhe directed وَ الشَّیٰطِیْنَAnd the devilsكُلَّeveryبَنَّآءٍbuilderوَّ غَوَّاصٍۙand diver وَّ اٰخَرِیْنَAnd othersمُقَرَّنِیْنَboundفِیinالْاَصْفَادِ chains هٰذَاThisعَطَآؤُنَا(is) Our giftفَامْنُنْso grantاَوْorاَمْسِكْwithholdبِغَیْرِwithoutحِسَابٍ account وَ اِنَّAnd indeedلَهٗfor himعِنْدَنَاwith Usلَزُلْفٰیsurely is a near accessوَ حُسْنَand a goodمَاٰبٍ۠place of return

Translation of Verse 27-40

27. We have not created the heavens and earth and everything in between without purpose-as the disbelievers think. So woe to the disbelievers because of the Fire!

28. Or should We treat those who believe and do good like those who make mischief throughout the land? Or should We treat the righteous like the wicked?

29. ˹This is˺ a blessed Book which We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ so that they may contemplate its verses, and people of reason may be mindful.

30. And We blessed David with Solomon-what an excellent servant ˹he was˺! Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺.

31. ˹Remember˺ when the well-trained, swift horses were paraded before him in the evening.

32. He then proclaimed, "I am truly in love with ˹these˺ fine things out of remembrance for Allah," until they went out of sight.

33. ˹He ordered,˺ "Bring them back to me!" Then he began to rub down their legs and necks. ⁹⁴⁵

34. And indeed, We tested Solomon, placing a ˹deformed˺ body on his throne, ⁹⁴⁶ then he turned ˹to Allah in repentance˺.

35. He prayed, "My Lord! Forgive me, and grant me an authority that will never be matched by anyone after me. You are indeed the Giver ˹of all bounties˺."

36. So We subjected to him the wind, blowing gently at his command to wherever he pleased.

37. And ˹We subjected to him˺ every builder and diver ⁹⁴⁷ of the jinn,

38. and others bound together in chains.

39. ˹Allah said,˺ "This is Our gift, so give or withhold ˹as you wish˺, never to be called to account."

40. And he will indeed have ˹a status of˺ closeness to Us and an honourable destination!

Commentary

945. Some commentators have a different interpretation, which is not supported by reliable sources. They maintain that Solomon kept watching these fine horses until the sun set, then he realized that he had missed the noon prayer because of his love for horses, so he killed them, striking at their legs and necks.

946. It is reported in a ḥadîth collected by Bukhâri that one night Solomon said that each of his wives would conceive a boy who would struggle in Allah's cause. He forgot to say 'Allah willing," so only one of them gave birth to a deformed, dead baby. So Solomon prayed to Allah for forgiveness.

947. The jinn dived to bring him pearls.
