Quran Text of Verse 41-64وَ اذْكُرْAnd rememberعَبْدَنَاۤOur slaveاَیُّوْبَ ۘAyyubاِذْwhenنَادٰیhe calledرَبَّهٗۤhis LordاَنِّیْThat [I]مَسَّنِیَhas touched meالشَّیْطٰنُShaitaanبِنُصْبٍwith distressوَّ عَذَابٍؕand suffering اُرْكُضْStrikeبِرِجْلِكَ ۚwith your footهٰذَاThisمُغْتَسَلٌۢ(is a spring) of water to batheبَارِدٌcoolوَّ شَرَابٌ and a drink 38. Sad Page 456وَ وَهَبْنَاAnd We grantedلَهٗۤ[to] himاَهْلَهٗhis familyوَ مِثْلَهُمْand a like of themمَّعَهُمْwith themرَحْمَةًa Mercyمِّنَّاfrom Usوَ ذِكْرٰیand a Reminderلِاُولِیfor those of understandingالْاَلْبَابِ for those of understanding وَ خُذْAnd takeبِیَدِكَin your handضِغْثًاa bunchفَاضْرِبْand strikeبِّهٖwith itوَ لَاand (do) notتَحْنَثْ ؕbreak (your) oathاِنَّاIndeed Weوَجَدْنٰهُ[We] found himصَابِرًا ؕpatientنِّعْمَan excellentالْعَبْدُ ؕslaveاِنَّهٗۤIndeed heاَوَّابٌ repeatedly turned وَ اذْكُرْAnd rememberعِبٰدَنَاۤOur slavesاِبْرٰهِیْمَIbrahimوَ اِسْحٰقَand Ishaqوَ یَعْقُوْبَand Ayyub,اُولِیpossessorsالْاَیْدِیْ(of) strengthوَ الْاَبْصَارِ and vision اِنَّاۤIndeed Weاَخْلَصْنٰهُمْ[We] chose themبِخَالِصَةٍfor an exclusive (quality)ذِكْرَیremembranceالدَّارِۚ(of) the Home وَ اِنَّهُمْAnd indeed theyعِنْدَنَاto Usلَمِنَ(are) fromالْمُصْطَفَیْنَthe chosen onesالْاَخْیَارِؕthe best وَ اذْكُرْAnd rememberاِسْمٰعِیْلَIsmailوَ الْیَسَعَand Al-Yasaوَ ذَاand Dhul-kiflالْكِفْلِ ؕand Dhul-kiflوَ كُلٌّand allمِّنَ(are) fromالْاَخْیَارِؕthe best هٰذَاThisذِكْرٌ ؕ(is) a Reminderوَ اِنَّAnd indeedلِلْمُتَّقِیْنَfor the righteousلَحُسْنَsurely is a goodمَاٰبٍۙplace of return جَنّٰتِGardensعَدْنٍ(of) Eternityمُّفَتَّحَةً(will be) openedلَّهُمُfor themالْاَبْوَابُۚthe gates مُتَّكِـِٕیْنَRecliningفِیْهَاthereinیَدْعُوْنَthey will callفِیْهَاthereinبِفَاكِهَةٍfor fruitكَثِیْرَةٍmanyوَّ شَرَابٍ and drink وَ عِنْدَهُمْAnd with themقٰصِرٰتُ(will be) companions of modest gazeالطَّرْفِ(will be) companions of modest gazeاَتْرَابٌ well-matched هٰذَاThisمَا(is) whatتُوْعَدُوْنَyou are promisedلِیَوْمِfor (the) Dayالْحِسَابِ (of) Account اِنَّIndeedهٰذَاthisلَرِزْقُنَا(is) surely Our provisionمَاnotلَهٗfor itمِنْanyنَّفَادٍۚۖdepletion هٰذَا ؕThis (is so)!وَ اِنَّAnd indeedلِلطّٰغِیْنَfor the transgressorsلَشَرَّsurely (is) an evilمَاٰبٍۙplace of return جَهَنَّمَ ۚHellیَصْلَوْنَهَا ۚthey will burn thereinفَبِئْسَand wretched isالْمِهَادُ the resting place هٰذَا ۙThis (is so)!فَلْیَذُوْقُوْهُThen let them taste itحَمِیْمٌboiling fluidوَّ غَسَّاقٌۙand purulence وَّ اٰخَرُAnd otherمِنْofشَكْلِهٖۤits typeاَزْوَاجٌؕ(of various) kinds هٰذَاThisفَوْجٌ(is) a companyمُّقْتَحِمٌbursting inمَّعَكُمْ ۚwith youلَاNoمَرْحَبًۢاwelcomeبِهِمْ ؕfor themاِنَّهُمْIndeed theyصَالُوا(will) burnالنَّارِ (in) the Fire قَالُوْاThey sayبَلْNay!اَنْتُمْ ۫Youلَاnoمَرْحَبًۢاwelcomeبِكُمْ ؕfor youاَنْتُمْYouقَدَّمْتُمُوْهُbrought thisلَنَا ۚupon usفَبِئْسَSo wretched isالْقَرَارُ the settlement قَالُوْاThey will sayرَبَّنَاOur Lordمَنْwhoeverقَدَّمَbroughtلَنَاupon usهٰذَاthisفَزِدْهُincrease for himعَذَابًاa punishmentضِعْفًاdoubleفِیinالنَّارِ the Fire 38. Sad Page 457وَ قَالُوْاAnd they will sayمَاWhat (is)لَنَاfor usلَاnotنَرٰیwe seeرِجَالًاmenكُنَّاwe used (to)نَعُدُّهُمْcount themمِّنَamongالْاَشْرَارِؕthe bad ones اَتَّخَذْنٰهُمْDid we take themسِخْرِیًّا(in) ridiculeاَمْorزَاغَتْhas turned awayعَنْهُمُfrom themالْاَبْصَارُ the vision اِنَّIndeedذٰلِكَthatلَحَقٌّ(is) surely (the) truthتَخَاصُمُ(the) quarrelingاَهْلِ(of the) peopleالنَّارِ۠(of) the Fire

Translation of Verse 41-64

41. And remember Our servant Job, when he cried out to his Lord, "Satan has afflicted me with distress and suffering."

42. ˹We responded,˺ "Stomp your foot: ˹now˺ here is a cool ˹and refreshing˺ spring for washing and drinking."

43. And We gave him back his family, twice as many, as a mercy from Us and a lesson for people of reason.

44. ˹And We said to him,˺ "Take in your hand a bundle of grass, and strike ˹your wife˺ with it, and do not break your oath." ⁹⁴⁸ We truly found him patient. What an excellent servant ˹he was˺! Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺.

45. And remember Our servants: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob-the men of strength and insight.

46. We truly chose them for the honour of proclaiming the Hereafter.

47. And in Our sight they are truly among the chosen and the finest.

48. Also remember Ishmael, Elisha, and Ⱬul-Kifl. ⁹⁴⁹ All are among the best.

49. This is ˹all˺ a reminder. And the righteous will certainly have an honourable destination:

50. the Gardens of Eternity, whose gates will be open for them.

51. There they will recline, calling for abundant fruit and drink.

52. And with them will be maidens of modest gaze and equal age.

53. This is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning.

54. This is indeed Our provision that will never end.

55. That is that. And the transgressors will certainly have the worst destination:

56. Hell, where they will burn. What an evil place to rest!

57. Let them then taste this: boiling water and ˹oozing˺ pus,

58. and other torments of the same sort!

59. ˹The misleaders will say to one another,˺ "Here is a crowd ˹of followers˺ being thrown in with us. They are not welcome, ˹for˺ they ˹too˺ will burn in the Fire." ⁹⁵⁰

60. The followers will respond, "No! You are not welcome! You brought this upon us. What an evil place for settlement!"

61. Adding, "Our Lord! Whoever brought this upon us, double their punishment in the Fire."

62. The tyrants will ask ˹one another˺, "But why do we not see those we considered to be lowly?

63. Were we wrong in mocking them ˹in the world˺? ⁹⁵¹ Or do our eyes ˹just˺ fail to see them ˹in the Fire˺?"

64. This dispute between the residents of the Fire will certainly come to pass.

Commentary

948. Job was afflicted with losing his children, community, and with a long illness. Only his wife stayed with him. He once became angry with his wife and vowed to give her one hundred lashes if he recovered. When Job's affliction was lifted, he became remorseful at what he had said. To help Job fulfil his vow without harming his wife, Allah ordered him to strike her with a bundle of one hundred blades of grass.

949. Scholars are in disagreement as to whether Ⱬul-Kifl was a prophet or just a righteous man. Those who maintain that he was a prophet identify him with various Biblical prophets such as Ezekiel, Isaiah, and Obadiah.

950. Meaning, they are not welcome since their presence in Hell with us will not benefit us in anyway.

951. In other words, did we underestimate them?
