Quran Text of Verse 38-50وَ قَالَAnd saidالَّذِیْۤthe one whoاٰمَنَbelievedیٰقَوْمِO my people!اتَّبِعُوْنِFollow meاَهْدِكُمْI will guide youسَبِیْلَ(to the) wayالرَّشَادِۚthe right یٰقَوْمِO my people!اِنَّمَاOnlyهٰذِهِthisالْحَیٰوةُthe lifeالدُّنْیَا(of) the worldمَتَاعٌ ؗ(is) enjoymentوَّ اِنَّand indeedالْاٰخِرَةَthe Hereafterهِیَitدَارُ(is the) homeالْقَرَارِ (of) settlement مَنْWhoeverعَمِلَdoesسَیِّئَةًan evilفَلَاthen notیُجْزٰۤیhe will be recompensedاِلَّاbutمِثْلَهَا ۚ(the) like thereofوَ مَنْand whoeverعَمِلَdoesصَالِحًاrighteousnessمِّنْwhetherذَكَرٍmaleاَوْorاُنْثٰیfemaleوَ هُوَwhile heمُؤْمِنٌ(is) a believerفَاُولٰٓىِٕكَthen thoseیَدْخُلُوْنَwill enterالْجَنَّةَParadiseیُرْزَقُوْنَthey will be given provisionفِیْهَاin itبِغَیْرِwithoutحِسَابٍ account 40. Ghafir Page 472وَ یٰقَوْمِAnd O my people!مَاHow (is it)لِیْۤfor meاَدْعُوْكُمْ(that) I call youاِلَیtoالنَّجٰوةِthe salvationوَ تَدْعُوْنَنِیْۤwhile you call meاِلَیtoالنَّارِؕthe Fire! تَدْعُوْنَنِیْYou call meلِاَكْفُرَthat I disbelieveبِاللّٰهِin Allahوَ اُشْرِكَand (to) associateبِهٖwith Himمَاwhatلَیْسَnotلِیْfor meبِهٖof itعِلْمٌ ؗany knowledgeوَّ اَنَاand Iاَدْعُوْكُمْcall youاِلَیtoالْعَزِیْزِthe All-Mightyالْغَفَّارِ the Oft-Forgiving لَاNoجَرَمَdoubtاَنَّمَاthat whatتَدْعُوْنَنِیْۤyou call meاِلَیْهِto itلَیْسَnotلَهٗfor itدَعْوَةٌa claimفِیinالدُّنْیَاthe worldوَ لَاand notفِیinالْاٰخِرَةِthe Hereafterوَ اَنَّand thatمَرَدَّنَاۤour returnاِلَی(is) toاللّٰهِAllahوَ اَنَّand thatالْمُسْرِفِیْنَthe transgressorsهُمْtheyاَصْحٰبُ(will be the) companionsالنَّارِ (of) the Fire فَسَتَذْكُرُوْنَAnd you will rememberمَاۤwhatاَقُوْلُI sayلَكُمْ ؕto youوَ اُفَوِّضُand I entrustاَمْرِیْۤmy affairاِلَیtoاللّٰهِ ؕAllahاِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahبَصِیْرٌۢ(is) All-Seerبِالْعِبَادِ of (His) slaves فَوَقٰىهُSo Allah protected himاللّٰهُSo Allah protected himسَیِّاٰتِ(from the) evilsمَاthatمَكَرُوْاthey plottedوَ حَاقَand envelopedبِاٰلِ(the) peopleفِرْعَوْنَ(of) Firaunسُوْٓءُ(the) worstالْعَذَابِۚpunishment اَلنَّارُThe Fireیُعْرَضُوْنَthey are exposedعَلَیْهَاto itغُدُوًّاmorningوَّ عَشِیًّا ۚand eveningوَ یَوْمَAnd (the) Dayتَقُوْمُ(will be) establishedالسَّاعَةُ ۫the HourاَدْخِلُوْۤاCause to enterاٰلَ(the) peopleفِرْعَوْنَ(of) Firaunاَشَدَّ(in the) severestالْعَذَابِ punishment وَ اِذْAnd whenیَتَحَآجُّوْنَthey will disputeفِیinالنَّارِthe Fireفَیَقُوْلُthen will sayالضُّعَفٰٓؤُاthe weakلِلَّذِیْنَto those whoاسْتَكْبَرُوْۤاwere arrogantاِنَّاIndeed weكُنَّا[we] wereلَكُمْfor youتَبَعًاfollowersفَهَلْso canاَنْتُمْyouمُّغْنُوْنَavertعَنَّاfrom usنَصِیْبًاa portionمِّنَofالنَّارِthe Fire قَالَWill sayالَّذِیْنَthose whoاسْتَكْبَرُوْۤا(were) arrogantاِنَّاIndeed weكُلٌّallفِیْهَاۤ ۙ(are) in itاِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahقَدْcertainlyحَكَمَhas judgedبَیْنَbetweenالْعِبَادِ (His) slaves وَ قَالَAnd will sayالَّذِیْنَthoseفِیinالنَّارِthe Fireلِخَزَنَةِto (the) keepersجَهَنَّمَ(of) HellادْعُوْاCallرَبَّكُمْyour Lordیُخَفِّفْ(to) lightenعَنَّاfor usیَوْمًاa dayمِّنَofالْعَذَابِ the punishment 40. Ghafir Page 473قَالُوْۤاThey (will) sayاَوَ لَمْDid there notتَكُDid there notتَاْتِیْكُمْcome to youرُسُلُكُمْyour Messengersبِالْبَیِّنٰتِ ؕwith clear proofsقَالُوْاThey (will) sayبَلٰی ؕYesقَالُوْاThey (will) sayفَادْعُوْا ۚThen callوَ مَاbut notدُعٰٓؤُا(is) the callالْكٰفِرِیْنَ(of) the disbelieversاِلَّاexceptفِیْinضَلٰلٍ۠error

Translation of Verse 38-50

38. And the man who believed urged, "O my people! Follow me, ˹and˺ I will lead you to the Way of Guidance.

39. O my people! This worldly life is only ˹a fleeting˺ enjoyment, whereas the Hereafter is truly the home of settlement.

40. Whoever does an evil deed will only be paid back with its equivalent. And whoever does good, whether male or female, and is a believer, they will enter Paradise, where they will be provided for without limit.

41. O my people! How is it that I invite you to salvation, while you invite me to the Fire!

42. You invite me to disbelieve in Allah and associate with Him what I have no knowledge of, while I invite you to the Almighty, Most Forgiving.

43. There is no doubt that whatever ˹idols˺ you invite me to ˹worship˺ are not worthy to be invoked either in this world or the Hereafter. ⁹⁷² ˹Undoubtedly,˺ our return is to Allah, and the transgressors will be the inmates of the Fire.

44. You will remember what I say to you, and I entrust my affairs to Allah. Surely Allah is All-Seeing of all ˹His˺ servants."

45. So Allah protected him from the evil of their schemes. And Pharaoh's people were overwhelmed by an evil punishment:

46. they are exposed to the Fire ˹in their graves˺ morning and evening. And on the Day the Hour will be established ˹it will be said˺, "Admit Pharaoh's people into the harshest punishment ˹of Hell˺."

47. ˹Consider the Day˺ when they will dispute in the Fire, and the lowly ˹followers˺ will appeal to the arrogant ˹leaders˺, "We were your ˹dedicated˺ followers, will you then shield us from a portion of the Fire?"

48. The arrogant will say, "We are all in it! ˹For˺ Allah has already passed judgment over ˹His˺ servants."

49. And those in the Fire will cry out to the keepers of Hell, ⁹⁷³ "Pray to your Lord to lighten the torment for us ˹even˺ for one day!"

50. The keepers will reply, "Did your messengers not ˹constantly˺ come to you with clear proofs?" They will say, "Yes ˹they did˺." The keepers will say, "Then pray! Though the prayer of the disbelievers is only in vain."

Commentary

972. Another possible translation: "Without a doubt, whatever ˹gods˺ you are calling me to ˹worship˺ have no claim ˹to divinity˺ in this world or the Hereafter."

973. The verse does not say "Those in the Fire will cry out to its keepers," simply because there are levels in the Fire: those in higher levels will plead to the keepers of the depths of Hell to appeal to Allah to lighten the punishment even for one day, since they think they are better than those at the bottom.
