Quran Text of Verse 11-19اِذْWhenیُغَشِّیْكُمُHe covered youالنُّعَاسَwith [the] slumberاَمَنَةًa securityمِّنْهُfrom Himوَ یُنَزِّلُand sent downعَلَیْكُمْupon youمِّنَfromالسَّمَآءِthe skyمَآءًwaterلِّیُطَهِّرَكُمْso that He may purify youبِهٖwith itوَ یُذْهِبَand take awayعَنْكُمْfrom youرِجْزَevil (suggestions)الشَّیْطٰنِ(of) the Shaitaanوَ لِیَرْبِطَAnd to strengthenعَلٰی[on]قُلُوْبِكُمْyour heartsوَ یُثَبِّتَand make firmبِهِwith itالْاَقْدَامَؕyour feet اِذْWhenیُوْحِیْinspiredرَبُّكَyour Lordاِلَیtoالْمَلٰٓىِٕكَةِthe AngelsاَنِّیْI amمَعَكُمْwith youفَثَبِّتُواso strengthenالَّذِیْنَthose whoاٰمَنُوْا ؕbelievedسَاُلْقِیْI will castفِیْinقُلُوْبِ(the) heartsالَّذِیْنَ(of) those whoكَفَرُواdisbelievedالرُّعْبَthe terrorفَاضْرِبُوْاso strikeفَوْقَaboveالْاَعْنَاقِthe necksوَ اضْرِبُوْاand strikeمِنْهُمْfrom themكُلَّeveryبَنَانٍؕfingertip[s] ذٰلِكَThatبِاَنَّهُمْ(is) because theyشَآقُّواopposedاللّٰهَAllahوَ رَسُوْلَهٗ ۚand His Messengerوَ مَنْAnd whoeverیُّشَاقِقِopposesاللّٰهَAllahوَ رَسُوْلَهٗand His Messengerفَاِنَّthen indeedاللّٰهَAllahشَدِیْدُ(is) severeالْعِقَابِ in [the] penalty ذٰلِكُمْThatفَذُوْقُوْهُSo taste itوَ اَنَّAnd thatلِلْكٰفِرِیْنَfor the disbelieversعَذَابَ(is the) punishmentالنَّارِ (of) the Fire یٰۤاَیُّهَاO youالَّذِیْنَwhoاٰمَنُوْۤاbelieveاِذَاWhenلَقِیْتُمُyou meetالَّذِیْنَthose whoكَفَرُوْاdisbelieveزَحْفًاadvancingفَلَاthen (do) notتُوَلُّوْهُمُturn to themالْاَدْبَارَۚthe backs وَ مَنْAnd whoeverیُّوَلِّهِمْturns to themیَوْمَىِٕذٍthat dayدُبُرَهٗۤhis backاِلَّاexceptمُتَحَرِّفًا(as) a strategyلِّقِتَالٍof warاَوْorمُتَحَیِّزًا(to) joinاِلٰیtoفِئَةٍa groupفَقَدْcertainlyبَآءَ(he has) incurredبِغَضَبٍwrathمِّنَofاللّٰهِAllahوَ مَاْوٰىهُand his abodeجَهَنَّمُ ؕ(is) Hellوَ بِئْسَa wretchedالْمَصِیْرُ destination 8. Al-Anfal Page 179فَلَمْAnd notتَقْتُلُوْهُمْyou kill themوَ لٰكِنَّbutاللّٰهَAllahقَتَلَهُمْ ۪killed themوَ مَاAnd notرَمَیْتَyou threwاِذْwhenرَمَیْتَyou threwوَ لٰكِنَّbutاللّٰهَAllahرَمٰی ۚthrewوَ لِیُبْلِیَand that He may testالْمُؤْمِنِیْنَthe believersمِنْهُfrom Himبَلَآءً(with) a trialحَسَنًا ؕgoodاِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahسَمِیْعٌ(is) All-Hearingعَلِیْمٌ All-Knowing ذٰلِكُمْThat (is the case)وَ اَنَّand thatاللّٰهَAllah (is)مُوْهِنُone who makes weakكَیْدِ(the) planالْكٰفِرِیْنَ (of) the disbelievers اِنْIfتَسْتَفْتِحُوْاyou ask for victoryفَقَدْthen certainlyجَآءَكُمُhas come to youالْفَتْحُ ۚthe victoryوَ اِنْAnd ifتَنْتَهُوْاyou desistفَهُوَthen it (is)خَیْرٌgoodلَّكُمْ ۚfor youوَ اِنْbut ifتَعُوْدُوْاyou returnنَعُدْ ۚWe will return (too)وَ لَنْAnd neverتُغْنِیَwill availعَنْكُمْyouفِئَتُكُمْyour forcesشَیْـًٔاanythingوَّ لَوْeven ifكَثُرَتْ ۙ(they are) numerousوَ اَنَّAnd thatاللّٰهَAllahمَعَ(is) withالْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ۠the believers

Translation of Verse 11-19

11. ˹Remember˺ when He caused drowsiness to overcome you, giving you serenity. ³⁴¹ And He sent down rain from the sky to purify you, free you from Satan's whispers, strengthen your hearts, and make ˹your˺ steps firm.

12. ˹Remember, O Prophet,˺ when your Lord revealed to the angels, "I am with you. So make the believers stand firm. I will cast horror into the hearts of the disbelievers. So strike their necks and strike their fingertips."

13. This is because they defied Allah and His Messenger. And whoever defies Allah and His Messenger, then ˹know that˺ Allah is surely severe in punishment.

14. That ˹worldly punishment˺ is yours, so taste it! Then the disbelievers will suffer the torment of the Fire.

15. O believers! When you face the disbelievers in battle, never turn your backs to them.

16. And whoever does so on such an occasion -unless it is a manoeuvre or to join their own troops-will earn the displeasure of Allah, and their home will be Hell. What an evil destination!

17. It was not you ˹believers˺ who killed them, but it was Allah Who did so. Nor was it you ˹O Prophet˺ who threw ˹a handful of sand at the disbelievers˺, ³⁴² but it was Allah Who did so, rendering the believers a great favour. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

18. As such, Allah frustrates the evil plans of the disbelievers.

19. If you ˹Meccans˺ sought judgment, now it has come to you. And if you cease, it will be for your own good. But if you persist, We will persist. And your forces-no matter how numerous they might be- will not benefit you whatsoever. For Allah is certainly with the believers.

Commentary

341. This happened the night before the battle.

342. Before the battle, the Prophet ( ﷺ ) threw a handful of sand at the disbelievers and prayed for their defeat.
