Quran Text of Verse 78-84اَقِمِEstablishالصَّلٰوةَthe prayerلِدُلُوْكِat the declineالشَّمْسِ(of) the sunاِلٰیtillغَسَقِ(the) darknessالَّیْلِ(of) the nightوَ قُرْاٰنَand Quranالْفَجْرِ ؕat dawnاِنَّindeedقُرْاٰنَthe Quranالْفَجْرِ(at) the dawnكَانَisمَشْهُوْدًا ever witnessed وَ مِنَAnd fromالَّیْلِthe nightفَتَهَجَّدْarise from sleep for prayerبِهٖwith itنَافِلَةً(as) additionalلَّكَ ۖۗfor youعَسٰۤیit may beاَنْthatیَّبْعَثَكَwill raise youرَبُّكَyour Lordمَقَامًا(to) a stationمَّحْمُوْدًا praiseworthy وَ قُلْAnd sayرَّبِّMy Lord!اَدْخِلْنِیْCause me to enterمُدْخَلَan entranceصِدْقٍsoundوَّ اَخْرِجْنِیْand cause me to exitمُخْرَجَan exitصِدْقٍsoundوَّ اجْعَلْand makeلِّیْfor meمِنْfromلَّدُنْكَnear Youسُلْطٰنًاan authorityنَّصِیْرًا helping وَ قُلْAnd sayجَآءَHas comeالْحَقُّthe truthوَ زَهَقَand perishedالْبَاطِلُ ؕthe falsehoodاِنَّIndeedالْبَاطِلَthe falsehoodكَانَisزَهُوْقًا (bound) to perish وَ نُنَزِّلُAnd We revealمِنَfromالْقُرْاٰنِthe Quranمَاthatهُوَitشِفَآءٌ(is) a healingوَّ رَحْمَةٌand a mercyلِّلْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ ۙfor the believersوَ لَاbut notیَزِیْدُit increasesالظّٰلِمِیْنَthe wrongdoersاِلَّاexceptخَسَارًا (in) loss وَ اِذَاۤAnd whenاَنْعَمْنَاWe bestow favorعَلَیonالْاِنْسَانِmanاَعْرَضَhe turns awayوَ نَاٰand becomes remoteبِجَانِبِهٖ ۚon his sideوَ اِذَاAnd whenمَسَّهُtouches himالشَّرُّthe evilكَانَhe isیَـُٔوْسًا (in) despair قُلْSayكُلٌّEachیَّعْمَلُworksعَلٰیonشَاكِلَتِهٖ ؕhis mannerفَرَبُّكُمْbut your Lordاَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingبِمَنْof whoهُوَ[he]اَهْدٰی(is) best guidedسَبِیْلًا۠(in) way

Translation of Verse 78-84

78. Observe the prayer from the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and the dawn prayer, for certainly the dawn prayer is witnessed ˹by angels˺. ⁵³⁴

79. And rise at ˹the last˺ part of the night, offering additional prayers, so your Lord may raise you to a station of praise. ⁵³⁵

80. And say, "My Lord! Grant me an honourable entrance and an honourable exit ⁵³⁶ and give me a supporting authority from Yourself."

81. And declare, "The truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is bound to vanish."

82. We send down the Quran as a healing and mercy for the believers, but it only increases the wrongdoers in loss.

83. When We grant people Our favours, they turn away, acting arrogantly. But when touched with evil, they lose all hope.

84. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ "Everyone acts in their own way. But your Lord knows best whose way is rightly guided."

Commentary

534. This verse gives the times of the five daily prayers: the decline of the sun refers to the afternoon and late afternoon prayers, the darkness of night refers to sunset and late evening prayers, then the dawn prayer.

535. This refers to the time when the Prophet ( ﷺ ) will make intercession ( shafâ'ah ) on the Day of Judgment.

536. This verse was revealed when the Prophet ( ﷺ ) received the order to emigrate from Mecca to Medina. So here he ( ﷺ ) is praying to leave Mecca honourably and enter Medina honourably. It can also apply to any worldly activity that a person starts and finishes.
