Quran Text of Verse 31-40وَ لَاAnd (do) notتَقْتُلُوْۤاkillاَوْلَادَكُمْyour childrenخَشْیَةَ(for) fearاِمْلَاقٍ ؕ(of) povertyنَحْنُWeنَرْزُقُهُمْ(We) provide for themوَ اِیَّاكُمْ ؕand for youاِنَّIndeedقَتْلَهُمْtheir killingكَانَisخِطْاًa sinكَبِیْرًا great وَ لَاAnd (do) notتَقْرَبُواgo nearالزِّنٰۤیadulteryاِنَّهٗIndeed itكَانَisفَاحِشَةً ؕan immoralityوَ سَآءَand (an) evilسَبِیْلًا way وَ لَاAnd (do) notتَقْتُلُواkillالنَّفْسَthe soulالَّتِیْwhichحَرَّمَAllah has forbiddenاللّٰهُAllah has forbiddenاِلَّاexceptبِالْحَقِّ ؕby rightوَ مَنْAnd whoeverقُتِلَ(is) killedمَظْلُوْمًاwrongfullyفَقَدْverilyجَعَلْنَاWe have madeلِوَلِیِّهٖfor his heirسُلْطٰنًاan authorityفَلَاbut notیُسْرِفْhe should exceedفِّیinالْقَتْلِ ؕthe killingاِنَّهٗIndeed, heكَانَisمَنْصُوْرًا helped وَ لَاAnd (do) notتَقْرَبُوْاcome nearمَالَ(the) wealthالْیَتِیْمِ(of) the orphanاِلَّاexceptبِالَّتِیْwith whatهِیَ[it] isاَحْسَنُbestحَتّٰیuntilیَبْلُغَhe reachesاَشُدَّهٗ ۪his maturityوَ اَوْفُوْاAnd fulfilبِالْعَهْدِ ۚthe covenantاِنَّIndeedالْعَهْدَthe covenantكَانَwill beمَسْـُٔوْلًا questioned وَ اَوْفُواAnd give fullالْكَیْلَ[the] measureاِذَاwhenكِلْتُمْyou measureوَ زِنُوْاand weighبِالْقِسْطَاسِwith the balanceالْمُسْتَقِیْمِ ؕthe straightذٰلِكَThatخَیْرٌ(is) goodوَّ اَحْسَنُand bestتَاْوِیْلًا (in) result وَ لَاAnd (do) notتَقْفُpursueمَاwhatلَیْسَnotلَكَyou haveبِهٖof itعِلْمٌ ؕany knowledgeاِنَّIndeedالسَّمْعَthe hearingوَ الْبَصَرَand the sightوَ الْفُؤَادَand the heartكُلُّallاُولٰٓىِٕكَthoseكَانَwill beعَنْهُ[about it]مَسْـُٔوْلًا questioned وَ لَاAnd (do) notتَمْشِwalkفِیinالْاَرْضِthe earthمَرَحًا ۚ(with) insolenceاِنَّكَIndeed youلَنْwill neverتَخْرِقَtearالْاَرْضَthe earthوَ لَنْand will neverتَبْلُغَreachالْجِبَالَthe mountainsطُوْلًا (in) height كُلُّAllذٰلِكَthatكَانَisسَیِّئُهٗ[its] evilعِنْدَnearرَبِّكَyour Lordمَكْرُوْهًا hateful 17. Al-Isra Page 286ذٰلِكَThatمِمَّاۤ(is) from whatاَوْحٰۤی(was) revealedاِلَیْكَto youرَبُّكَ(from) your Lordمِنَofالْحِكْمَةِ ؕthe wisdomوَ لَاAnd (do) notتَجْعَلْmakeمَعَwithاللّٰهِAllahاِلٰهًاgodاٰخَرَotherفَتُلْقٰیlest you should be thrownفِیْinجَهَنَّمَHellمَلُوْمًاblameworthyمَّدْحُوْرًا abandoned اَفَاَصْفٰىكُمْThen has chosen (for) youرَبُّكُمْyour Lordبِالْبَنِیْنَsonsوَ اتَّخَذَand He has takenمِنَfromالْمَلٰٓىِٕكَةِthe Angelsاِنَاثًا ؕdaughtersاِنَّكُمْIndeed, youلَتَقُوْلُوْنَsurely sayقَوْلًاa wordعَظِیْمًا۠grave

Translation of Verse 31-40

31. Do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Surely killing them is a heinous sin. 7) Do Not Commit Adultery

32. Do not go near adultery. It is truly a shameful deed and an evil way. 8) Do Not Kill

33. Do not take a ˹human˺ life-made sacred by Allah-except with ˹legal˺ right. ⁵²⁰ If anyone is killed unjustly, We have given their heirs ⁵²¹ the authority, but do not let them exceed limits in retaliation, ⁵²² for they are already supported ˹by law˺. 9) Protect Orphans' Wealth, 10) Honour Pledges

34. Do not come near the wealth of the orphan-unless intending to enhance it-until they attain maturity. And honour ˹your˺ pledges, for you will surely be accountable for them. 11) Maintain Fairness

35. Give in full when you measure, and weigh with an even balance. That is fairest and best in the end. 12) Be Sure

36. Do not follow what you have no ˹sure˺ knowledge of. Indeed, all will be called to account for ˹their˺ hearing, sight, and intellect. 13) Be Humble

37. And do not walk on the earth arrogantly. Surely you can neither crack the earth nor stretch to the height of the mountains.

38. The violation of any of these ˹commandments˺ is detestable to your Lord.

39. This is part of the wisdom which your Lord has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺. And do not set up any other god with Allah ˹O humanity˺, or you will be cast into Hell, blameworthy, rejected.

40. Has your Lord favoured you ˹pagans˺ with sons and taken angels as ˹His˺ daughters? ⁵²³ You are truly making an outrageous claim.

Commentary

520. For example, in retaliation for intentional killing through legal channels.

521. Here the word wali, "heir," actually means awliyâ ' or "heirs," which includes the closest relatives, both men and women.

522. By killing anyone other than the killer, or killing others with the killer.

523. Some pagans had the belief that the angels are the daughters of Allah.
