Quran Text of Verse 100-1109. At-Tawbah Page 203وَ السّٰبِقُوْنَAnd the forerunnersالْاَوَّلُوْنَthe firstمِنَamongالْمُهٰجِرِیْنَthe emigrantsوَ الْاَنْصَارِand the helpersوَ الَّذِیْنَand those whoاتَّبَعُوْهُمْfollowed themبِاِحْسَانٍ ۙin righteousnessرَّضِیَAllah is pleasedاللّٰهُAllah is pleasedعَنْهُمْwith themوَ رَضُوْاand they are pleasedعَنْهُwith Himوَ اَعَدَّAnd He has preparedلَهُمْfor themجَنّٰتٍGardensتَجْرِیْflowsتَحْتَهَاunderneath itالْاَنْهٰرُthe riversخٰلِدِیْنَwill abideفِیْهَاۤin itاَبَدًا ؕforeverذٰلِكَThatالْفَوْزُ(is) the successالْعَظِیْمُ the great وَ مِمَّنْAnd among thoseحَوْلَكُمْaround youمِّنَofالْاَعْرَابِthe bedouinsمُنٰفِقُوْنَ ۛؕ(are) hypocritesوَ مِنْand (also) fromاَهْلِpeopleالْمَدِیْنَةِ ؔۛ۫(of) the MadinahمَرَدُوْاThey persistعَلَیinالنِّفَاقِ ۫the hypocrisyلَاnotتَعْلَمُهُمْ ؕyou know themنَحْنُWeنَعْلَمُهُمْ ؕ[We] know themسَنُعَذِّبُهُمْWe will punish themمَّرَّتَیْنِtwiceثُمَّthenیُرَدُّوْنَthey will be returnedاِلٰیtoعَذَابٍa punishmentعَظِیْمٍۚgreat وَ اٰخَرُوْنَAnd othersاعْتَرَفُوْا(who have) acknowledgedبِذُنُوْبِهِمْtheir sinsخَلَطُوْاThey had mixedعَمَلًاa deedصَالِحًاrighteousوَّ اٰخَرَ(with) otherسَیِّئًا ؕ(that was) evilعَسَیPerhapsاللّٰهُAllahاَنْ[that]یَّتُوْبَwill turn (in mercy)عَلَیْهِمْ ؕto themاِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahغَفُوْرٌ(is) Oft-Forgivingرَّحِیْمٌ Most Merciful خُذْTakeمِنْfromاَمْوَالِهِمْtheir wealthصَدَقَةًa charityتُطَهِّرُهُمْpurifying themوَ تُزَكِّیْهِمْand cause them increaseبِهَاby itوَصَلِّand blessعَلَیْهِمْ ؕ[upon] themاِنَّIndeedصَلٰوتَكَyour blessingsسَكَنٌ(are a) reassuranceلَّهُمْ ؕfor themوَ اللّٰهُAnd Allahسَمِیْعٌ(is) All-Hearerعَلِیْمٌ All-Knower اَلَمْDo notیَعْلَمُوْۤاthey knowاَنَّthatاللّٰهَAllahهُوَ(is) Heیَقْبَلُ(Who) acceptsالتَّوْبَةَthe repentanceعَنْfromعِبَادِهٖHis slavesوَ یَاْخُذُand takesالصَّدَقٰتِthe charitiesوَ اَنَّand thatاللّٰهَAllahهُوَHeالتَّوَّابُ(is) the Acceptor of repentanceالرَّحِیْمُ the Most Merciful وَ قُلِAnd sayاعْمَلُوْاDoفَسَیَرَیthen Allah will seeاللّٰهُthen Allah will seeعَمَلَكُمْyour deedوَ رَسُوْلُهٗand His Messengerوَ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ ؕand the believersوَ سَتُرَدُّوْنَAnd you will be brought backاِلٰیtoعٰلِمِ(the) Knowerالْغَیْبِ(of) the unseenوَ الشَّهَادَةِand the seenفَیُنَبِّئُكُمْthen He will inform youبِمَاof whatكُنْتُمْyou used (to)تَعْمَلُوْنَۚdo وَ اٰخَرُوْنَAnd othersمُرْجَوْنَdeferredلِاَمْرِfor the Command of Allahاللّٰهِfor the Command of AllahاِمَّاwhetherیُعَذِّبُهُمْHe will punish themوَ اِمَّاorیَتُوْبُHe will turn (in mercy)عَلَیْهِمْ ؕto themوَ اللّٰهُAnd Allahعَلِیْمٌ(is) All-Knowerحَكِیْمٌ All-Wise 9. At-Tawbah Page 204وَ الَّذِیْنَAnd those whoاتَّخَذُوْاtakeمَسْجِدًاa masjidضِرَارًا(for causing) harmوَّ كُفْرًاand (for) disbeliefوَّ تَفْرِیْقًۢاand (for) divisionبَیْنَamongالْمُؤْمِنِیْنَthe believersوَ اِرْصَادًاand (as) a stationلِّمَنْfor whoeverحَارَبَwarredاللّٰهَ(against) Allahوَ رَسُوْلَهٗand His Messengerمِنْbeforeقَبْلُ ؕbeforeوَ لَیَحْلِفُنَّAnd surely they will swearاِنْNotاَرَدْنَاۤwe wishاِلَّاexceptالْحُسْنٰی ؕthe goodوَ اللّٰهُBut Allahیَشْهَدُbears witnessاِنَّهُمْindeed, theyلَكٰذِبُوْنَ (are) surely liars لَا(Do) notتَقُمْstandفِیْهِin itاَبَدًا ؕeverلَمَسْجِدٌA masjidاُسِّسَfoundedعَلَیonالتَّقْوٰیthe righteousnessمِنْfromاَوَّلِ(the) firstیَوْمٍdayاَحَقُّ(is) more worthyاَنْthatتَقُوْمَyou standفِیْهِ ؕin itفِیْهِWithin itرِجَالٌ(are) menیُّحِبُّوْنَwho loveاَنْtoیَّتَطَهَّرُوْا ؕpurify themselvesوَ اللّٰهُand Allahیُحِبُّlovesالْمُطَّهِّرِیْنَ the ones who purify themselves اَفَمَنْThen is (one) whoاَسَّسَfoundedبُنْیَانَهٗhis buildingعَلٰیonتَقْوٰیrighteousnessمِنَfromاللّٰهِAllahوَ رِضْوَانٍand (His) pleasureخَیْرٌbetterاَمْorمَّنْ(one) whoاَسَّسَfoundedبُنْیَانَهٗhis buildingعَلٰیonشَفَاedgeجُرُفٍ(of) a cliffهَارٍ(about to) collapseفَانْهَارَso it collapsedبِهٖwith himفِیْinنَارِ(the) Fireجَهَنَّمَ ؕ(of) Hellوَ اللّٰهُAnd Allahلَا(does) notیَهْدِیguideالْقَوْمَthe wrongdoing peopleالظّٰلِمِیْنَ the wrongdoing people لَاNotیَزَالُ(will) ceaseبُنْیَانُهُمُtheir buildingالَّذِیْwhichبَنَوْاthey builtرِیْبَةًa (cause of) doubtفِیْinقُلُوْبِهِمْtheir heartsاِلَّاۤexceptاَنْthatتَقَطَّعَ(are) cut into piecesقُلُوْبُهُمْ ؕtheir heartsوَ اللّٰهُAnd Allahعَلِیْمٌ(is) All-Knowerحَكِیْمٌ۠All-Wise

Translation of Verse 100-110

100. As for the foremost-the first of the Emigrants ³⁷⁴ and the Helpers ³⁷⁵ -and those who follow them in goodness, Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. And He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there for ever and ever. That is the ultimate triumph.

101. Some of the nomads around you ˹believers˺ are hypocrites, as are some of the people of Medina. They have mastered hypocrisy. They are not known to you ˹O Prophet˺; they are known to Us. We will punish them twice ˹in this world˺, ³⁷⁶ then they will be brought back ˹to their Lord˺ for a tremendous punishment.

102. Some others have confessed their wrongdoing: they have mixed goodness with evil. ³⁷⁷ It is right to hope that Allah will turn to them in mercy. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

103. Take from their wealth ˹O Prophet˺ charity to purify and bless them, and pray for them-surely your prayer is a source of comfort for them. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

104. Do they not know that Allah alone accepts the repentance of His servants and receives ˹their˺ charity, and that Allah alone is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful?

105. Tell ˹them, O Prophet˺, "Do as you will. Your deeds will be observed by Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the seen and unseen, then He will inform you of what you used to do."

106. And some others are left for Allah's decision, either to punish them or turn to them in mercy. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

107. There are also those ˹hypocrites˺ who set up a mosque ˹only˺ to cause harm, promote disbelief, divide the believers, and as a base for those who had previously fought against Allah and His Messenger. ³⁷⁹ They will definitely swear, "We intended nothing but good," but Allah bears witness that they are surely liars.

108. Do not ˹O Prophet˺ ever pray in it. Certainly, a mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your prayers. In it are men who love to be purified. ³⁸⁰ And Allah loves those who purify themselves.

109. Which is better: those who laid the foundation of their building on the fear and pleasure of Allah, or those who did so on the edge of a crumbling cliff that tumbled down with them into the Fire of Hell? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

110. The building which they erected will never cease to fuel hypocrisy in their hearts until their hearts are torn apart. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Commentary

374. i.e., the early Muslims who emigrated from Mecca to Medina, known as Al-Muhâjirûn .

375. i.e., those from Medina, known as Al-Anṣâr , who accepted Islam and sheltered Muslim emigrants from Mecca.

376. Through disgrace in this world and bad ending of their lives.

377. They have mixed their adherence to Islam with their disobedience to march forth with the Prophet ( ﷺ ) to Tabûk.

378. This verse refers to Ka'b ibn Mâlik, Murarah ibn Rabi', and Hilâl ibn Umaiyah, the three companions who remained in Medina with no excuse, but were honest about what they did. They were boycotted by Muslims for about fifty days until verses 118-119 of this sûrah were revealed declaring the acceptance of their repentance.

379. Abu 'Âmer Ar-Râhib was a monk who fought against Muslims at the Battle of Badr. He ordered a group of twelve hypocrites to build a mosque near the Mosque of Qubâ', the first mosque built by Muslims and also where the Prophet ( ﷺ ) and his companions would pray. The new mosque, commonly referred to as Masjid Aḍ- Ḍirâr (Mosque of Harm), was intended to attract other hypocrites and reduce the number of Muslims who prayed at Qubâ'. The hypocrites who built the mosque also anticipated the arrival of Abu 'Âmer with Roman forces to expel the Prophet ( ﷺ ) and Muslims out of Medina. Upon a request from these hypocrites, the Prophet ( ﷺ ) had planned to visit the new mosque once he returned from Tabûk, but verses 107-110 of this sûrah were revealed, warning the Prophet ( ﷺ ) against that mosque. According to some narrations, the Prophet ( ﷺ ) ordered this mosque to be burned down.
