Quran Text of Verse 43-50یٰۤاَیُّهَاO youالَّذِیْنَwhoاٰمَنُوْاbelieve[d]!لَا(Do) notتَقْرَبُواgo nearالصَّلٰوةَthe prayerوَ اَنْتُمْwhile youسُكٰرٰی(are) intoxicatedحَتّٰیuntilتَعْلَمُوْاyou knowمَاwhatتَقُوْلُوْنَyou are sayingوَ لَاand notجُنُبًا(when you are) impureاِلَّاexceptعَابِرِیْ(when) passingسَبِیْلٍ(through) a wayحَتّٰیuntilتَغْتَسِلُوْا ؕyou have bathedوَ اِنْAnd ifكُنْتُمْyou areمَّرْضٰۤیillاَوْorعَلٰیonسَفَرٍa journeyاَوْorجَآءَcameاَحَدٌoneمِّنْكُمْof youمِّنَfromالْغَآىِٕطِthe toiletاَوْorلٰمَسْتُمُyou have touchedالنِّسَآءَthe womenفَلَمْand notتَجِدُوْاyou findمَآءًwaterفَتَیَمَّمُوْاthen do tayammumصَعِیْدًا(with) earthطَیِّبًاcleanفَامْسَحُوْاand wipe (with it)بِوُجُوْهِكُمْyour facesوَ اَیْدِیْكُمْ ؕand your handsاِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahكَانَisعَفُوًّاOft-Pardoningغَفُوْرًا Oft-Forgiving اَلَمْDid notتَرَyou seeاِلَی[towards]الَّذِیْنَthose whoاُوْتُوْاwere givenنَصِیْبًاa portionمِّنَofالْكِتٰبِthe Bookیَشْتَرُوْنَpurchasingالضَّلٰلَةَ[the] errorوَ یُرِیْدُوْنَand wishingاَنْthatتَضِلُّواyou strayالسَّبِیْلَؕ(from) the way 4. An-Nisa Page 86وَ اللّٰهُAnd Allahاَعْلَمُknows betterبِاَعْدَآىِٕكُمْ ؕabout your enemiesوَ كَفٰیand (is) sufficientبِاللّٰهِAllahوَلِیًّا ؗۗ(as) a Protectorوَّ كَفٰیand sufficientبِاللّٰهِ(is) Allahنَصِیْرًا (as) a Helper مِنَOfالَّذِیْنَthose whoهَادُوْاare Jewsیُحَرِّفُوْنَthey distortالْكَلِمَthe wordsعَنْfromمَّوَاضِعِهٖtheir placesوَ یَقُوْلُوْنَand they sayسَمِعْنَاWe hear[d]وَ عَصَیْنَاand we disobey[ed]وَ اسْمَعْand Hearغَیْرَnotمُسْمَعٍto be heardوَّ رَاعِنَاand Rainaلَیًّۢاtwistingبِاَلْسِنَتِهِمْ[with] their tonguesوَ طَعْنًاand defamingفِی[in]الدِّیْنِ ؕthe religionوَ لَوْAnd ifاَنَّهُمْ[that] theyقَالُوْا(had) saidسَمِعْنَاWe hear[d]وَ اَطَعْنَاand we obey[ed]وَ اسْمَعْand Hearوَ انْظُرْنَاand look (at) usلَكَانَsurely it (would) have beenخَیْرًاbetterلَّهُمْfor themوَ اَقْوَمَ ۙand more suitableوَ لٰكِنْ[And] butلَّعَنَهُمُcursed themاللّٰهُAllahبِكُفْرِهِمْfor their disbeliefفَلَاso notیُؤْمِنُوْنَthey believeاِلَّاexceptقَلِیْلًا a few یٰۤاَیُّهَاO youالَّذِیْنَwhoاُوْتُوا(have) been givenالْكِتٰبَthe Bookاٰمِنُوْاbelieveبِمَاin whatنَزَّلْنَاWe (have) revealedمُصَدِّقًاconfirmingلِّمَاwhat isمَعَكُمْwith youمِّنْfromقَبْلِbeforeاَنْ[that]نَّطْمِسَWe effaceوُجُوْهًاfacesفَنَرُدَّهَاand turn themعَلٰۤیonاَدْبَارِهَاۤtheir backsاَوْorنَلْعَنَهُمْWe curse themكَمَاasلَعَنَّاۤWe cursedاَصْحٰبَcompanionsالسَّبْتِ ؕ(of) the Sabbathوَ كَانَAnd isاَمْرُ(the) commandاللّٰهِ(of) Allahمَفْعُوْلًا (always) executed اِنَّIndeedاللّٰهَAllahلَا(does) notیَغْفِرُforgiveاَنْthatیُّشْرَكَpartners be associatedبِهٖwith Himوَ یَغْفِرُbut He forgivesمَاfromدُوْنَother thanذٰلِكَthatلِمَنْfor whomیَّشَآءُ ۚHe willsوَ مَنْAnd whoeverیُّشْرِكْassociates partnersبِاللّٰهِwith Allahفَقَدِthen surelyافْتَرٰۤیhe has fabricatedاِثْمًاa sinعَظِیْمًا tremendous اَلَمْDo notتَرَyou seeاِلَی[towards]الَّذِیْنَthose whoیُزَكُّوْنَclaim purityاَنْفُسَهُمْ ؕ(for) themselvesبَلِNayاللّٰهُ(it is) AllahیُزَكِّیْHe purifiesمَنْwhomیَّشَآءُHe willsوَ لَاand notیُظْلَمُوْنَthey will be wrongedفَتِیْلًا (even as much as) a hair on a date-seed اُنْظُرْSeeكَیْفَhowیَفْتَرُوْنَthey inventعَلَیaboutاللّٰهِAllahالْكَذِبَ ؕ[the] lieوَ كَفٰیand sufficientبِهٖۤis itاِثْمًا(as) a sinمُّبِیْنًا۠manifest

Translation of Verse 43-50

43. O believers! Do not approach prayer while intoxicated ¹⁹⁹ until you are aware of what you say, nor in a state of ˹full˺ impurity ²⁰⁰ - unless you merely pass through ˹the mosque˺-until you have bathed. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth, wiping your faces and hands. ²⁰¹ And Allah is Ever-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

44. Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen those who were given a portion of the Scriptures yet trade it for misguidance and wish to see you deviate from the ˹Right˺ Path?

45. Allah knows best who your enemies are! And Allah is sufficient as a Guardian, and He is sufficient as a Helper.

46. Some Jews take words out of context and say, "We listen and we disobey," "Hear! May you never hear," and " Râ'ina ! " [Herd us!]- playing with words and discrediting the faith. Had they said ˹courteously˺, "We hear and obey," "Listen to us," and " Unẓurna ," [Tend to us!] it would have been better for them and more proper. Allah has condemned them for their disbelief, so they do not believe except for a few.

47. O you who were given the Book! Believe in what We have revealed-confirming your own Scriptures-before We wipe out ˹your˺ faces, turning them backwards, or We condemn the defiant as We did to the Sabbath-breakers. ²⁰³ And Allah's command is always executed!

48. Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others with Him ˹in worship˺, ²⁰⁴ but forgives anything else of whoever He wills. And whoever associates others with Allah has indeed committed a grave sin.

49. Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen those who ˹falsely˺ elevate themselves? It is Allah who elevates whoever He wills. And none will be wronged ˹even by the width of˺ the thread of a date stone.

50. See how they fabricate lies against Allah-this alone is a blatant sin.

Commentary

199. Intoxicants were prohibited in the Quran in three stages: 2:219, 4:43, and finally 5:90-91.

200. i.e., after sexual intercourse or a wet dream.

201. This ruling is called tayammum or 'dry ablution.' If someone cannot find water or is unable to use it because of illness or cold weather, then they are allowed to touch clean earth, sand, etc. with the palms of their hands once then blow in their hands and wipe over their face and hands.

204. A person will never be forgiven if they die as a disbeliever. But if they repent before their death and mend their ways, then their repentance will be accepted ( see 25:68-70).
