Quran Text of Verse 142-147وَ وٰعَدْنَاAnd We appointedمُوْسٰی(for) Musaثَلٰثِیْنَthirtyلَیْلَةًnightsوَّ اَتْمَمْنٰهَاand We completed themبِعَشْرٍwith ten (more)فَتَمَّso was completedمِیْقَاتُ(the) set termرَبِّهٖۤ(of) his Lordاَرْبَعِیْنَ(of) fortyلَیْلَةً ۚnight(s)وَ قَالَAnd saidمُوْسٰیMusaلِاَخِیْهِto his brotherهٰرُوْنَHarunاخْلُفْنِیْTake my placeفِیْinقَوْمِیْmy peopleوَ اَصْلِحْand do rightوَ لَاand (do) notتَتَّبِعْfollowسَبِیْلَ(the) wayالْمُفْسِدِیْنَ (of) the corrupters وَ لَمَّاAnd whenجَآءَcameمُوْسٰیMusaلِمِیْقَاتِنَاto Our appointed placeوَ كَلَّمَهٗand spoke to himرَبُّهٗ ۙhis Lordقَالَhe saidرَبِّO my LordاَرِنِیْۤShow meاَنْظُرْ(that) I may lookاِلَیْكَ ؕat YouقَالَHe saidلَنْNeverتَرٰىنِیْyou (can) see Meوَ لٰكِنِbutانْظُرْlookاِلَیatالْجَبَلِthe mountainفَاِنِ[then] ifاسْتَقَرَّit remainsمَكَانَهٗin its placeفَسَوْفَthenتَرٰىنِیْ ۚyou (will) see MeفَلَمَّاBut whenتَجَلّٰیrevealed (His) Gloryرَبُّهٗhis Lordلِلْجَبَلِto the mountainجَعَلَهٗHe made itدَكًّاcrumbled to dustوَّ خَرَّand fell downمُوْسٰیMusaصَعِقًا ۚunconsciousفَلَمَّاۤAnd whenاَفَاقَhe recoveredقَالَhe saidسُبْحٰنَكَGlory be to YouتُبْتُI turn (in repentance)اِلَیْكَto youوَ اَنَاand I amاَوَّلُ(the) firstالْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ (of) the believers 7. Al-A'raf Page 168قَالَHe saidیٰمُوْسٰۤیO Musa!اِنِّیIndeed Iاصْطَفَیْتُكَhave chosen youعَلَیoverالنَّاسِthe peopleبِرِسٰلٰتِیْwith My Messagesوَ بِكَلَامِیْ ۖؗand with My wordsفَخُذْSo takeمَاۤwhatاٰتَیْتُكَI have given youوَ كُنْand beمِّنَamongالشّٰكِرِیْنَ the grateful وَ كَتَبْنَاAnd We ordained (laws)لَهٗfor himفِیinالْاَلْوَاحِthe tabletsمِنْofكُلِّeveryشَیْءٍthingمَّوْعِظَةًan instructionوَّ تَفْصِیْلًاand explanationلِّكُلِّfor everyشَیْءٍ ۚthingفَخُذْهَاSo take themبِقُوَّةٍwith firmnessوَّ اْمُرْand orderقَوْمَكَyour peopleیَاْخُذُوْا[to] takeبِاَحْسَنِهَا ؕ(the) best of itسَاُورِیْكُمْI will show youدَارَ(the) homeالْفٰسِقِیْنَ (of) the defiantly disobedient سَاَصْرِفُI will turn awayعَنْfromاٰیٰتِیَMy Signsالَّذِیْنَthose whoیَتَكَبَّرُوْنَare arrogantفِیinالْاَرْضِthe earthبِغَیْرِwithoutالْحَقِّ ؕ[the] rightوَ اِنْand ifیَّرَوْاthey seeكُلَّeveryاٰیَةٍsignلَّاnotیُؤْمِنُوْا(will) they believeبِهَا ۚin itوَ اِنْAnd ifیَّرَوْاthey seeسَبِیْلَ(the) wayالرُّشْدِ(of) the righteousnessلَاnotیَتَّخِذُوْهُ(will) they take itسَبِیْلًا ۚ(as) a wayوَ اِنْbut ifیَّرَوْاthey seeسَبِیْلَ(the) wayالْغَیِّ(of) [the] errorیَتَّخِذُوْهُthey will take itسَبِیْلًا ؕ(as) a wayذٰلِكَThatبِاَنَّهُمْ(is) because theyكَذَّبُوْاdeniedبِاٰیٰتِنَاOur Signsوَ كَانُوْاand they wereعَنْهَاof themغٰفِلِیْنَ heedless وَ الَّذِیْنَAnd those whoكَذَّبُوْاdeniedبِاٰیٰتِنَاOur Signsوَ لِقَآءِand (the) meetingالْاٰخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterحَبِطَتْworthlessاَعْمَالُهُمْ ؕ(are) their deedsهَلْWillیُجْزَوْنَthey be recompensedاِلَّاexceptمَا(for) whatكَانُوْاthey used toیَعْمَلُوْنَ۠do

Translation of Verse 142-147

142. We appointed for Moses thirty nights then added another ten- completing his Lord's term of forty nights. Moses commanded his brother Aaron, "Take my place among my people, do what is right, and do not follow the way of the corruptors."

143. When Moses came at the appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he asked, "My Lord! Reveal Yourself to me so I may see You." Allah answered, "You cannot see Me! But look at the mountain. If it remains firm in its place, only then will you see Me." When his Lord appeared to the mountain, He levelled it to dust and Moses collapsed unconscious. When he recovered, he cried, "Glory be to You! I turn to You in repentance and I am the first of the believers."

144. Allah said, "O Moses! I have ˹already˺ elevated you above all others by My messages and speech. ³²⁴ So hold firmly to what I have given you and be grateful."

145. We wrote for him on the Tablets ˹the fundamentals˺ of everything; commandments and explanations of all things. ˹We commanded,˺ "Hold to this firmly and ask your people to take the best of it. ³²⁵ I will soon show ˹all of˺ you the home of the rebellious. ³²⁶

146. I will turn away from My signs those who act unjustly with arrogance in the land. And even if they were to see every sign, they still would not believe in them. If they see the Right Path, they will not take it. But if they see a crooked path, they will follow it. This is because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.

147. The deeds of those who deny Our signs and the meeting ˹with Allah˺ in the Hereafter will be in vain. Will they be rewarded except for what they have done?"

Commentary

324. Allah reminds Moses that even though his request to see Allah was denied, he has already been favoured by Allah over the people of his time through prophethood and direct communication with the Almighty.

325. To follow the commandments that generate more rewards than others, to put grace before justice, etc.

326. This could either mean the ruins of destroyed nations or the Hellfire which is the home of the wicked.
